SFU PDP admission evaluation system - how does it work?

edited April 2013 in General
Does anyone here know how the evaluation system works at SFU for the PDP intake? I applied for the PDP program and have received the following ratings: Written assignment 2.5, Work experience/resume 2.5, Letter of reference 2.0, Academic preparedness 2.0, GPA 3.0.  I am on a long waitlist right now. Any advise on how I can bump up my scores? I got two nicely written letters of reference from the two teachers that I helped in an elementary school. I don't know why I recd only 2.0 on the references. I did not do the Educ, Kineseology and Fine arts courses as I was told y SFU that those were optional. Maybe that's why my academic preparedness score is low. Any other advise? What do they see in the written assignment? How do I increase my score there?

  • I went to the PDP information session, and they talked about how taking a Kine CLass, Fine Arts and Education class would boost your Academic Prep Score to a 4/4.

The woman who ran it also said, that the work experience, is about quality of experience, parenting, over seas travel, and class room experience, not just orientation.

Also the reference letters, needs to follow a strict guideline as provided on the PDP website.

Finally, she did say you could contact the PDP department to get a chance to review your PDP admissions with the advisor and review your package ratings.

She said they might suggest areas to improve.

She also said, there is always movement on the waitlist, so don't worry.

Your score is 12 which according to the last list of minimum score's required for admission, is only 1 off.

So be positive, take a KIN/FPA and Education course and you can easily improve your admission score by 2 points!

Good luck, otherwise go to the next information session.

I know a guy who was ~30-40 on the waitlist and got in (for elementary).  So there's a lot of movement.

You do get points for having a kin and educ class.  Maybe think about taking 2 over the summer.  Also, it's very difficult to get 4/4 in that category because they reserve 0.5 point for students with a masters/doctorate degree.  It's dumb, but that's how they do it.

I would also target the written assignment and try to bump it up 0.5 points.

Best of luck.  If you have any other questions about PDP, let me know.
