Academic probation twice??

edited April 2013 in General
Hey guys in a bit of a dilemma here as the semester wraps up. Heres the jist of it, I was put on probation after my first semester and by my 3rd I worked my way back to good standing. Now i've hit a pretty bad new low with grades this semester and i was wondering if I will be put me back on probation? Or will i just be required to withdraw at this point?? :/.

  • Damn thats actually a relief considering my other option. No matter how bad I did this semester eh?
  • Don't mess up next semester! (I've been on ap twice as well..) I know it's tough but you can improve, try taking fewer classes.
  • Yeah for sure thanks for the common story tho really helpin me pull through. The main issue with my grades is not because im having trouble with material but its because I have the time management skills of a chimp. Always cramming, feeling overwhelmed and procrastinating (sigh)
  • Is this your first year? If it is, then this would be a good wake up call. If you can't survive the first year then the rest of your university life is going to be very difficult. It's tempting to leave everything to the end, i know, but you really have to plan ahead if your time management is not so great.

Here's what i do. If I am taking 4 courses, in a regular semester, i plan out my weeks. So on Monday and Friday between my breaks, I would do the homework for subject 1 in a workshop, and then on Tuesday I will start and finish subject two. Every weekend I will spend that time reading or studying. etc. It's like a workout schedule you know? You will find the best gains if you stick to a schedule. You can't expect to be buff by cramming all your workouts in 1-2 days. You will get tired and you need rest for your body to grow. Same for your brain. It doesn't work well by cramming all the information and the feeling of overwhelmed takes a negative effect on your mind as well and you will want to quit.

So why put yourself in that situation in the first place? Stick to a plan, do your best not to procrastinate and work hard throughout the semester. By exam time, you will only need to spend a few days reviewing. You'll see better results and you will be happier overall. So... it's all up to you know. University teaches you to act like an adult and take ownership in your work. If you can't do that, then it's going to be hard finding a job in the future.
  • No its my second actually but thats definitely some well headed advice friend. Ive heard alot of that before but that one struck a chord. Definitely need to make some changes to my lifestyle as this problem gets in the way of alot of other really important priorities. Makes me feel like half a man yknow? Might try to take only 1 course this summer to try to fix up that gpa and it will definitely be a time of reflection and change for me this summer.
Thanks big time for your insight guys.
  • You can do it! Retake the classes you effed up. Maybe take BOT 100. I took it, I found it to be very motivational, they make you make study schedules and goal planning but it's kinda nice cuz you're with a bunch of other people who are in the same situation.
  • I think taking 1 course might be too less. Do maybe 2, or 3 if you can. It's better to have a lot of decent courses with decent GPA rather than one really good one which won't have as big of an effect on your CGPA and GPA too.
