How much should I keep aside for phone expenses?

Hey guys, I'm an international student at SFU and will be coming for the summer term. My question:

1) How much will I have to pay if I buy a new phone? Tell me the initial amount (if any, like a down payment) and the monthly charges. I know you don't know which plan I'll buy, but something average, something that you guys use?

2) How much will I have to pay if I bring with me my OWN phone. The monthly sum, how much?

I suggest you buy a nexus 4 phone directly from google. It costs $360 including taxes and shipping.

Then go to Fido and get their $20 basic plan. You get some calling and texting time. If you want data, for got their $40 plan.
