Is MATH 157 really that bad? Taking it with ECON 105 in summer

edited March 2013 in General
Hey guys~

Has anyone here taken MATH 157, what are your thoughts about it? from the advisors and from some people i've spoken to, they say math 157 is the hardest pre req for business and for someone who has not done calculus in high school but just math 12, do you think it would be a very hard course? I got a B+ in math 12 and I wouldn't say I am great at math, I just hope it is manageable and that getting a B is doable?

I'm also taking ECON 105 in  the same term...would it be too much? i found ECON 103 quite difficult (had it with doug allen) but some ppl tell me 105 is a bit easier. maybe it depends on the person but haha I hope those 2 in the summer won't kill me

thanks in advance :)

  • In short, Math 157 is a difficult course, however if your willing to put in A LOT of time you'll get a decent to even good grade. Econ 105 is also difficult, I found it more difficult then 157 because of my math background, but it's alot easier then Econ 103 and Mr allen. Typically to do well in either course you'd need to put in 12-18 hours a week of studying, especially for math 157. Taking just those two courses in one semester it should be quite easy to get good grades. Prepare to study harder then you ever have, and you'll do fine, try to take it with friends aswell. Just remember its the easiest first year calculus course :P

  • ^Thanks for the comment Okashe!

Oh no two difficult courses :(  in terms of diffcult do you mean how much work you have to put in (EFFORT) or the content itself is hard as well as the exams? and does it depend on the prof or are all math 157 courses around the same lvl of difficulty?

Hmm I'm actually going to take a psychology research methods course long with those 2 courses, and PSYC 201W is a writing course so I'm kind of worried haha.

thanks a lot though i will try my best and hope I can get into business TT
  • I think it really depends on the person. econ 105 was easier than calculus I for me, and I took math 151 (more theoretical). math is just one of those subjects where u have to put in a lot of practice and do a lot of questions, and if you are willing to do that I guarantee you will get at least a B! and as for econ 105, it's way less math intensive unlike 103.. so that should help. good luck! :D
  • Calc 1 really isn't that bad if you put the effort in, plus there's so many online tutorials for the topics in the class, if you ever don't understand the textbook, check YouTube for an example and there should be tons.

it's hard for some and easy for others, depends on your background but if you try hard i think it's ok.
  • math 157 is easier than calc 1 (151).  since you got a relatively low mark in math 12, get comfortable with trig, graphing and algebra.  if you need to learn how to do stuff, search patrickjmt chain rule, for example.  you'll breeze through this course.  if you took calc 12 in highschool, 157 would be a free A+ for you.

econ 105 is pretty easy, just basic macro.  it will depend on your prof.  even though i did all the readings and understood everything pretty well, the test questions and marking scheme of written portion was unfair so I barely ended up with a A-.
  • I am taking Math 157 in the summer. We can always work together!
  • ^lol thanks everyone for the comments, really appreciate it :)

Yeah from what everyone is saying, I guess it does depend on the person. I probably should look up all those online calc tutorials right now and prepare this semester before I take it :c

The econ 105 profs for the summer are SJ Choi and  H. Xiang, anyone had them before?

Now I regret not doing calc 12 in high school :( I just have math 12 that's it lol. My friend needed a tutor and she barely got a B i think. I just hope taking it in the summer is doable because taking math when it's summer outside gosh it's gonna be distracting..

Sta37, Yeahhh :D maybe i'll see you in class heh heh.
  • i had sj choi.. all the girls were drooling over him everytime they see him because he looks like a kpop star

as for math 157, it's easy if you put effort. I failed my diagnostics test and ended up with A- for that class.
