High GPA = Free Education?

edited December 2012 in General
I hear that people with high GPA's (say, 3.5+) don't have to pay for tuition at all for each semester. One of my friends told me that one of her friends is in this situation. Can somebody confirm if this is true or not? Thanks!

  • This is not true. Unless they win a whole bunch of different scholarships.

The main scholarship at SFU is the open university scholarship which is automatically awarded to students with 30+ credits and a CGPA of at least 3.67 (this moves around a little I've heard, but I have never seen it lower than this.) The value of this scholarship varies, but for the last couple of years it has been $70 per credit. So Assuming you are taking 12 credits, it's $840. Tuition for comparable courses is over 2000.

If the person were to win this, and apply for and win other scholarships though it is possible to not have to pay tuition. That wouldn't be easy though, not to mention it would even harder to maintain on a semester to semester basis.
  • If you have a high GPA (3.67+) and you live at home, it's not hard to get a free education. Just apply for a few scholarships a month and you should be good.

  • Thanks! But does the open scholarship pay $70 per credit or does it pay the full amount of tuition?
  • $70 per credit.
  • Thank you so much! :)
