How is it fair that not one person receives a mark above a B in a course?

edited December 2012 in General
The course was marked so unreasonably hard that the highest grade was a B+ (the course isn't curved so no one gets an A)

  • well if the teacher doesnt think anyone deserves any higher then he is free to do as he wishes... everybody gets stuck with profs like this, it happens, and i know it sucks.
  • Are you sure no one got an A? I've had a few classes where the prof swore there would be no curving. However, if the entire class does poorly, I've found most profs will have to apply a "curve" to the class to meet with the department guidelines. This mark only shows up at the very end on SIS. I'm pretty sure the department has to review the grades to make sure they're not too high or too low.
  • How big was this class?
  • Highest mark was 78% lowest was 5% average was 50%
  • Did half of students fail?
  • F = 5 students
    D = 8 students
    C- = 9 students
    C = 9 students
    C+ = 10 students
    B- = 5 students
    B = 4 students
    No one got above a B
    There is only 50 students, I made a typo above

    If the average is 50% how did only 13 failed? Isn't a C- at 55% or so if the course is not scaled?

    Which course is it? I need to know to stay away from it :/ Looks like a horrible GPA buster
  • Average was actually 59% I misread the percentage when I first wrote it, which means the average is a D since this is the grading scale:

    A

    86-92

    Really excellent

    A-

    80-85

    Really excellent, with very minor quibbles

    B+

    77-79

    Very good

    B

    74-76

    Good, solid work

    B

    70-73

    Generally good

    C+

    67-69

    Quite adequate, with problems

    C

    64-66

    Adequate, with several substantial problems

    C-

    60-63

    Just adequate

    D

    50-59

    Marginal

    F

    0-49

    Unacceptable scholarship

  • Oops I made a another typo when posting the grades, there were couple of students who got a B+ like I said at the beginning
  • It doesn't matter, the profs do what they like....if they're nice and there's no department rules on grade curving she can give as many As and Bs and she thinks the student deserves
  • Where did you get the failure/success statistics of your specific class? Just curious.
  • The average, highest mark, lowest mark, median and standard deviation was all posted on WebCT for every assignment/test and our final letter grades and percentage. To determine how many students got what letter grade I looked at the histogram (just a estimate since the graphs on WebCT can be hard to read at times) and the grading scale posted
