Im taking it right now and personally... I hate it.
If you like reading ant talking about culture and common sense go ahead and take it. The tutorials are okay but the films do get a little boring.
The worst part HAS TO BE the reading. There are 3 books for this course. The textbook plus two novels. You dont have to read the whole novel but, you read more than half of it.
Also, you cant study for the midterm because its all BS. This course basically tests how well you can BS on the spot. The MT was all written..... It wasnt super hard but if you read all the stuff super early because you had other readings youre going to die.
My prof is Michael Hathaway... I find his voice kinda boring.... A lot of people love the course so it might just be me.
It is a course that doesnt have terms for you to memorize... its all concepts so remembering things is a bit hard, as you dont have a term to relate it to...
Currently, the tutorial participation mark is based on a presentation. Basically, we were randomly paired with someone and then we were asked to choose an assigned reading to present on.... This will most likely change next semester because the TAs will change.
The ethnographic exercises are also BS. I did well on the first one and I havent gotten the most recent one back yet... but I got an B+ on it.... Its pretty easy....
I think it all depends on how much you want to read.... I read all the novels on the bus... The first one was really boring..
An example of what youd talk about is something like.... How does clothing relate to space and time? And youd say: Clothing occupies space and time. It is culturally constructed, thus, clothing changes with time. For example, in todays world if you were told to imagine a person wearing heels, a dress and powdered make up youd image a woman, but in 18th century France these would all be characteristics of a very manly man.
An other example is, In "laughter out of place" (the first novel you have to read) why is Gloria (the main character) strict and harsh with her children. Why would she kick her own child out of the house?
Hope that helps of you have any questions just message me.
WOAH you gave me a lot of information...THANK YOU!! :D
if i do decide to take it; i'll message you again for the books... i don't think the prof are the same for the next semester. its Stacy Pigg (Burnaby) and Pamela Stern (Surrey)
