RTW... What do I do?

edited December 2012 in General
I completely bombed the first two semesters at SFU, and I was RTW. But I took the BOT program and managed to get a 2.0 GPA for the two semesters. But that still didn't bring my CGPA back up. It's stuck at slightly over 1.1. I just took all my finals for Fall 2012. I tried really hard this semester and I'm pretty sure I'll get RTW. What are my choices if I want to go back to SFU? Is it possible to start fresh at SFU (reset the cgpa)? What are my chances to applying to UBC as a new student, will they look at my SFU mark? I'm really worried right now...

  • First off, plenty of this information is on the sfu website, I'm sure a simple google will find it. I know it's there, I've been close to your situation and have read it.
Secondly, no you can't just reset your grades, you have to take responsibility for your grades, which will in fact follow you around everywhere.
Thirdly, go talk to an academic advisor ASAP. And are you sure about the classes you're taking? Maybe try a different major if you're having such a hard time (That's what I did).

Im not sure that this is the case, but I was under the impression you could apply to a new school using high school marks and get a fresh start. Not the same school though. That said though it won't be easier to do well at UBC, or any other university for that matter. If you search around the web there are a bunch of threads on this topic. In general most of them boil down to reassessing goals and seeing if university is really what you want to be doing.

Here is a link that talks about some of your options http://students.sfu.ca/academicadvising/difficulty.html

  • Well I HAVE to graduate from UBC or SFU. So if I want to go back to SFU then my CGPA is stuck with me. Otherwise I can start fresh at UBC if I can get in? Will they look at my SFU marks as well?
  • I am almost positive you can't go to UBC without them seeing your SFU grades, since they will ask you on your application. That would make no sense at all.. I think your best option is to go to Kwantlen or something for a semester  or  two then transfers back. Also if you retake your classes your marks will go up...  Did you look at the link ryan posted? It shows the GPA you need at another institution  in order to transfer back.
    • 12 - 17 units with a minimum 3.50 GPA
    • 18 - 23 units with a minimum 3.00 GPA
    • 24 - 29 units with a minimum 2.75 GPA or with the acceptance GPA* , whichever is higher.
    • 30 or more units with the acceptance GPA*
  • I think if you apply as a new student using your high school marks they will not see your university grades. As I say though I don't know for sure that this is the case. It would be best to talk to an advisor. The other alternative as outlined in the link is to do some transferable courses from a college and achieve a certain gpa in those. Then you can transfer back into SFU, and the course you transfer with you would bring up your cgpa.
