CHEM 121 help!

edited November 2012 in General
I haven't touched chem in about 2 years (highschool chem 12), I forgotten most of the concepts I learned. Would it be a good idea to take this class despite that fact or should I do a lower level chem class instead as a refresher?

  • Well, it really depends on how strong you are in chemistry. If you've forgotten them but think you could still relearn the concepts in a short time, I think you are good.

When I took Chem 121, I actually dropped it a few weeks after because they just went by SO FAST. You know how rigorous and quick the curriculum is...they cover material in one lecture that could have been covered in 2 weeks in high school. It's fast. There's a 5 hour lab every 2 weeks, a lon capa for that lab, PLUS lon capa for your regular lecture class. a tutorial each week too. I would just sit in class going crazy because the professor talks so fast, slides go so fast and I had no idea what's going on. It's a lot of work and I knew, since I wasn't particularly strong in chemistry, I had to drop it or it'd kill my gpa

So I'd say look at your chem marks in high school...did you do pretty good in them? Are you someone whos pretty good at science/chem anyway? It depends on the person but for me I struggled lol
  • I agree with the person above, it really depends what kind of a student you are.
I am in the same situation you are, took chem 12 couple of years ago and did pretty well, but i am kind of struggling right now, maybe due to the fact that it is my first semester in uni, but i have never been bad in chem...(made me rethink my major..HAHA)...

I'd say it depends...but best of luck to you :)
  • Lol similar to the two people above me, chem 121 in my opinion was a difficult course but its made significantly worse with a much more difficult professor. I would advise you to stay on track of this course for every loncapa or else it will be really difficult to stay ontop of the material which can get overwhelming. But as again, it really does depend on what type of student you are.
