SFU Grading

edited September 2012 in General
I'm a first year student at SFU.
I am taking MATH 150 in my first semester, and i find the course extremely difficult. The professor says he won't scale or curve the marks.

Am I screwed? or does the professor say he won't scale it, but then he actually will?

  • you're screwed.  study harder.  math is all about concept, you gotta know what you're doing before actually doing.
  • I am trying my best, but I just don't seem to get the concepts. I study about 2 hours of math everyday and I'm still stuck
  • Go to the tutorial centre or whatever services they have for the math department. And/or get a study partner or set up a study group.
  • Drop out now
  • step 1: watch and re-watch videos on khan academy for whatever concepts you struggle with.

step 2: find a textbook full solution manual so you can actually get something out of the practice questions.

    step 3: pass math courses

whether or not he scales it, it won't be to your benefit to squeak by in a math course if you don't really follow the material very well. it'll bite you in the ass in future courses.
  • he might not be bluffing. i remember talking to one of the math TAs one time and she had the opportunity to teach math 100 i believe. she was saying how since it was a pre-req to another class there are minimum standards that must be met (as in the students need to grasp a sufficient amount of the material), so more than half of the class ended up failing.

anyway its really foolish to keep scrapping along with the hope that the course would be curved. your current progress is a signal to you that immediate action is needed. either you have to make some changes to your study regimen and the effort you are putting in, or it's time to duck out of the class if you are worried about what grade you are going to get.
