Accepted Into Business w/ Less Than 3.17 Core GPA (Inspiration Thread)

edited June 2012 in General
I am currently like many of you... struggling to meet that damned 3.17 GPA mark to have the best chance to get into SFU Business.
I know how it feels to be stressed out all the time busting your ass to try and achieve it and even fall short. (I'm currently anchored pretty hard at around 3.0)

I wanted to make this thread so that anyone who has gotten into Business with less than the required 3.17 can post and help show everyone that it is possible to get in with less than that. Personally, I have a few friends who got in with around 2.85, and they wrote in supplementary letters explaining why they deserve to be in Business.

Hold your heads up guys, I know we can do it.

Post away!

  • who cares
  • i'm trying to get into business too..so stressful :(. i'm getting B+ in all the business/buec/econ courses but for math i got b- and eng i got C. i'm going to have to retake english next sem and i hope i do well in phil100 (which i'm taking right now) so i don't have to take another eng/phil course..
  • I really don't mean to be a troll, but why bother? Even if you enter with 3.17 it's only going to get worse for you unless you want to chronically be that B>= student. +, it used to be 3.5 to get in. So if 3.17 is too much, really you should reconsider. Find your interest.
  • ^ there's really nothing wrong with a gpa of 3.17. Business courses are marked on a curve based  on the class. The average for most business courses is C+ (2.33 GPA) so having a 3.17 GPA would put you a good margin above the average

That's untrue. The avg grade for upper division business classes for the last ten years has been 3.00.

And you are right, there is nothing wrong with 3.17. The point is why struggle to get into a department that one knows it's only going get worse? Anyways

^I think this person means the lower division courses, which makes sense because they are trying to weed people out in the 100-200 reqs for Business so the gpa is a bit lower.

Once you get into business and actually take upper level courses, everyone's in their own concentration, all the strong keeners are left so I assume this correlates with the higher 3.0 gpa avg in 300-400 lvls

Haven't taken 300-400 lvls..but I hope the upper levels are not as cut throat competitive as they all say it is, haha.

If someone could provide some comments about taking 3rd 4th yr business courses it'd be great. sorry for bumping an old thread!

Yeah sorry this thread is hella old... made this a long time ago lol, I'm just gonna delete it since it's all pretty common knowledge by now.

Good luck getting into Business.  Hopefully you're in before the regular Accounting program comes back in Fall/Spring and then people flock back to Beedie and the GPA goes back up continuously once again... ~3.18+
  • Hey, sorry for bumping this old thread, but did you get in? The admission GPA is 3.02 for Fall 2014. Right now I'm sitting at a 2.87 and I still have BUS 251, 272, 2 W courses, and Stat 270 to do. I basically need 3 B+s, and 2 Bs to get up to a 3.05 GPA. What do you think of my chances of getting in?

I seriously hope that the admission GPA drops even lower.
  • I highly doubt the person in this thread will reply back, but I'll send you a private message explaining my experience with transferring.
