Soo it's my first year at sfu and I've been hearing that there's no sense of school spirit and that's it's really boring. Is that true? Any cool clubs you guys recommend joining ?
This is true, especially in the Burnaby and Vancouver campus if you are not in any clubs. The Surrey campus on the other hand has a tightly knit community and has a very social environment.
I would say it is somewhat true. Keep in mind that the majority of SFU students now transfer into SFU from colleges (Douglas, Langara, Kwantlen, etc...) so the students tend to be older and more serious about their studies. This is in contrast to UBC which still has a huge number of first and second year students, and a much larger residence population, therefore more partying and more "spirit".
And I agree that the Surrey community is a lot more tight-knit than Burnaby + Vancouver. I am happy to be part of that close community, I've made some amazing friends at the Surrey campus. :)
Outdoors club! - does fun outdoors things like climbing, hiking, biking, etc. Ski & Board club! - does some skiing and snowboarding, but mostly partying. ARC - does anime, RPGs, cosplay, geeky things.
Join your student union and go to their events - good way to meet people in your faculty. If your student union isn't very active, organize your own events and use their funding to pay for stuff. Every student union gets money from the SFSS for events. Most of them don't use it.
I'd say stay away from the ethnic/religious clubs unless you're really into that sort of thing.. There are like, fifty different clubs for each ethnicity and religion, and in my opinion, they don't contribute to a healthy campus environment. They are exclusive by nature, even though they technically have to accept everyone.
