Advice on Fall 2011 course selection!

edited July 2011 in General

Hello. I just picked out my courses for this Fall. I was wondering if it is a manageable course load:-

BISC 101 (Burnaby): TuTh 9:30 to 10:20 am      OPEN LAB

BISC 102 (Burnaby): TuTh 12:30 to 1:30 pm     LAB: Tu or Th: 1:30 – 4:20

CMPT 120 (Surrey): M 5:30 to 9:30pm

CRIM 101 (Surrey): M 2:30 to 5:20pm

Though its just three days, I am just a bit apprehensive about taking Bisc 101 and 102 together. Will I be able to survive this combination with a 4.0+ GPA? :D

And, another question - can I take Chem 282 one semester and then take Chem 286 the following semester, or is it much better to take both of them together?

  • Taking BISC 101 and 102 together, in your case, should not be difficult. Most science students take CHEM 121 and either BISC 101 or 102 in the same semester (though CHEM 121 has a bi-weekly lab). BISC 101 is almost comepletely memorization, while BISC 102 is a combination of theory and memorization. The exams for the lab portion of both BISC 101 and 102 tend to be more difficult than the exams for the lecture component.

I don't know how common it is for first years (I'm assuming you are one) to get a 4.0+ GPA, but I'm sure it's not easy. For both of the biology courses, getting an A+ is definitely possible (I bombed a lab exam for BISC 101 and still got an A). I'm not sure about CMPT 120 or CRIM 101.

CHEM 286 is recommended as a co-requisite for CHEM 282, though you can take CHEM 286 in a later semester. I took CHEM 282 in my second year and I'm going to take CHEM 286 now, in my fourth year.
  • Thanks BSang! So, I finally ended up enrolling for Bisc 101, 102, and Chem 282 and 286 :P Hope I survive the Fall. I'll keep your advice in mind! Which program are you in, by the way? I'm in the Joint major in CS and MBB.
  • I'm in MBB. Good luck with your classes .
