Has Anyone Ever Taken Stat 270 with Derek Bingham?

edited February 2011 in General
I know he is teaching this semester and I have sat in a couple of his classes.  He seems like a pretty good instructor but I want to know....Are his assignments and hard?  Does he do pop quizzes like some stat profs? and how are the grades scaled?

Thanks a lot in advance!

  • I'm currently taking his class.

I find the assignments challenging and time consuming, but this is probably because I suck at math and get distracted easily.  The questions aren't unfair.  You can judge for yourself though: http://www.stat.sfu.ca/~dbingham/stat270/index.html

No pop quizzes so far, and I doubt there will be any coming up.

Scaling of grades? No idea yet.  I don't know how I scored on the recent midterm, but I'm not expecting anything unusually low or high, and I feel I should probably represent the median... unless I'm sadly mistaken.  I don't see any reason for scaling, unless it were to reduce the class average...
  • Confirmed today that no scaling takes place.
  • Thanks Arch for the info,

Did he mention the certain percentages required for certain letter grades or is it like some of my business classes where a certain number of people get As, Bs, etc...?
  • Well a certain # of people getting As, Bs, etc. would be scaling right? Or am I confused with something else?

If he posted a grading scheme, I can't find it.. so maybe he's going by the "suggested" grading scheme?
