SFU students protest $10 mill donation by GoldCorp.

  • WARNING - UNPOPULAR OPINION

It's cool to see someone sticking up for what they believe in, although I don't believe that SFU should reject the donation. The university needs the money and I don't understand some of the logic behind the protest. It seems that a big part of the issue is that the government isn't properly funding education, which may be true. However, I think it is highly unlikely that the university rejecting a private donation will result in the government magically coming up with any more money for education. It will just mean SFU will have less money than it would without the donation. Wouldn't a better strategy to be to accept the donation AND continue to lobby for increased public funding?

If private corporations want to contribute to SFU, I think that's great. It's not like they are making their donation contingent on controlling the curriculum or faculty or anything like that .

With regards to the human rights in Guatemala issue, I think it's unlikely that a university refusing to accept money from Goldcorp is going to change their practices. A boycott of their product would probably be a better strategy.
  • now this might be cynical of me but usually when a private company makes such a generous donation.. they usually want something in return.. so who knows what Gold Corp is pitching for..

that said.. i completely agree with you.. SFU needs money and if the government isn't doing it then a private donation will have to do.. so the million dollar question is.. what do they want out of SFU with their donation? cause if they say nothing.. that's just bull..
