English 102

edited December 2010 in General
I am considering taking this course and was wondering if it is recommended.

Has anyone taken it or heard anything?

  • I took it with Tiffany Werth in the summer. Loved it so much that I decided to take ENGL 203 (Early Modern Literature) with her in the Spring. But it wasn't the easiest of classes to take.

It might depend on the prof though. I heard some poetry classes focus on just interpreting poems through things like the choice of diction, rhyme scheme, allusion, symbolism, etc. We had to also analyze poems using scansion, which wasn't as easy as expected. When we worked on it together it seemed fine, but on the final I was completely lost. It is all about meter and considering when iambic feet are substituted for phyrric, trochee, spondee, anapest, dactyl, and a few other types of feet. We also had to physically draw in the strong and weak beats for the scansion section of the final and for the in-tutorial practice test. It was challenging to write essays, because she expected us to gather understanding of the poem and make conclusions through the use of scansion as evidence. Still ended up with a good mark though, and she was a fantastic prof who really wanted everyone to do well and had really engaging lectures.

So it might be worth checking out RateMyProf for the prof this term.
  • The one I am considering taking is with Matthew Hussey. His reviews on RMP are pretty solid but it doesn't say a lot about his Poetry class and what is expected.
