Father and son send an iPhone 4 into space

These guys sent an iPhone into space attached to a big balloon and recorrded thr whole thing... amazing to watch, reminded me of that episode of Magic School Bus where they go to space lol. Check it out..

  • I don't understand why they sent an iphone. They could have sent a much higher quality camcorder that is the exact same value. They could have sent a flip camera for much less and the video would have looked much better.
  • Ant they could've gone without battery problems too. I was waiting for the free fall part.
  • I think they needed it to send gps coordinates on the way down so they could figure out where it landed. They probably could have used separate hardware, but an iPhone includes all of the tools they needed and can be easily(ish) programmed.

    Also, people pay attention to stories with "iPhone" in them. Sadly, "space travel" just doesn't have the marketing buzz.
  • Yea I think it's mainly because of the HD video + GPS transmitter in one device plus the buzz that they knew it would create because of how popular the iPhone 4 is right now
  • if you pay attention around 1:35 it sounds like they're only using the iphone for the GPS and have a separate video camera in there.
