Question about Comp sci marks

edited August 2010 in General
Hey all... Im in comp sci and its my first semester at sfu.. taking cmpt 125, macm 101 and math 232
Finals are coming and Im kind of scared... Whats the percentages required for minimum A-? Im around 80-83 range for all my courses...
Also how is gpa determined? Is it straight up based on your letter grades?
Eg: A+ is a 4.3, A is a 4.0 and A- is a 3.7
Or is it calculated based on the percentage mark for the course?
Meaning gpa = %mark in course * 4.3

I've no idea. Marking is a bit of a black box on purpose, I think, to keep students on their toes. I suspect you'll pull B grades at minimum, however.

The letter grade you get in a course depends on how the course is graded, and if it is curved. Just compare yourself to the averages to get an idea of how your doing. Also, your GPA is calculated using the letter grades you got in each course (not percent). Specifically, you multiply the numerical value of the letter grade (out of 4.33) by the number of units in the corresponding course, add up all the values for each course and divide by the total number of units taken that semester:

    i usually assume the default grading scale to be 95-100 a+ 90-94 a 85-89 a- 80-84 b+
etc. unless the class average is way off. and i usually can estimate my grades pretty well.

macm 101 was curved for me when I took it, granted half the class failed the midterm and final, so there wasn't much of a choice. I got a B+ with a mark somewhere in the mid 60s

thx for the help guys... I managed an A- in 2 courses so far.. but I dont think math or cmpt marks are curved, but yea u guys were right about the letter grades depending on the prof
Math232.. Im pretty sure 80% got me an A-
    Cmpt 125.. 86ish got me an A-
Still have Macm left and its looking like its going to be the hardest of the three :(

Guess you were in my MACM class.. that final didn't see as hard as the quizes. I do hope the class is scaled. It sucks for the fact that our original prof left. We ended up losing almost 10 hrs of lectures.

I hope the marks are posted tomorrow. I have a feeling I bombed, unless it was scaled. That class was fine until we got up to 60% of the course.

That blows... Im guessing you were in Pearce's section. I was taking it with Khangura in Surrey. Yeah MACM definitely got harder towards the end. I did good, but my only saving grace was my prof had excellent notes. Because that textbook is pure torture to study from. Good luck, hope you did well.
