Business students, some questions...

edited August 2010 in General
I decided that, rather than do CMNS 130W this term, I'm going to power through the last of my LD business classes and take BUEC 232 in it's place. Since there's no waitlist, I have to camp it out to wait for a spot to open. Hopefully one will today, gonna check every 20 minutes or so to see if someone dropped it, since I'll be working on an essay all day anyways. So now my schedule will be:

MATH 157 w/ Stephen Choi
BUEC 232 w/ George Zhang
BUS 237 w/ Kamal Masri
ECON 103 w/ Iryna Dudnyk

Is this term going to be brutal? I mean, I know it probably isn't as intense as most science students doing five classes a term in preparation for med school, or engineering students, but math isn't my strongest subject. I just figured that, if I take these all in the fall, then when October rolls around I can apply for a transfer into Business for Spring 2011 admittance. And if my GPA for some reason doesn't end up being high enough, I can retake a class or two in the Spring and apply for Summer admittance.

Some more stuff now: has anyone taken BUS 207 with Karen Ruckman? I'm probably going to end up doing that in the Spring term, and I've heard from many people that 207 is definitely one of the hardest classes you'll do in Business. Any truth behind this? If I don't need to do any retakes, then I'll probably get 254 over and done with as well.

Also, since it'll take me until the end of the Spring term to reach over 60 credits, what is normally recommended for your first term of UD business courses? I figured that 360W for sure is one, maybe 312 (finance), and 336 (data & decisions 2). What did you end up doing? If it matters, I plan on doing two concentrations, in Marketing and HRM.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

I don't know how much this will help, but I trolled the Prelinger Archives' library of out of copyright books and found things like The Calculus for Beginners. :P

Some of the language and terminology may be out of date but trust me, differential calculus hasn't changed all that much since Newton invented it (and integral calculus, ditto ditto, Leibniz :P )

Also: MIT OpenCourseware lectures on calculus. Knock yourself out.

The above having been said I personally disagree with the author when he says ds/dt does not have meaning for ds and dt by themselves. Furthermore, regarding ds and dt as being incremental changes of s and t respectively, I find, lend physical meaning to the idea of a derivative: that for an incremental (arbitrarily small) change of one variable you obtain an incremental change of another. Also, regarding them as separable is how integral calculus works in the first place.

Yeah, that book was confusing as fuck. I'll stick with my more modern calc text I think >_> Thanks for the response though NukeChem.

And I know there are some business students on these forums, so get on in here! lol

Another bump. Show yourself business students! ;D

And I got my marks back for BUS 272 today and I got an A+. woo!

If you have Stephen Choi for 157 and George Zhang for 232 you should be ok. I SUCK at math and stats, but they are both seriously awesome profs that make those subjects easy. Good luck! :)

Thanks a bunch for the response. That makes me feel a lot better about it.

I'm in all the classes except BUEC right now. Still haven't found an open spot yet (doesn't have a waitlist unfortunately). I'm hoping that, since the term is approaching, people will start considering dropping now. If not, I'll just have to delay applying to Business and take BUEC with Zhang next term.

I actually hated BUEC 232 with Zhang. His teaching style wasn't the right one for me.
If you're a tech geek like me, 237 should be breezy and you might actually enjoy it. Masri is awesome. I decided that MIS was my concentration after taking this course.

If you're as bad as I am at math/calculus/stats/number related subjects I'd be careful with taking 232 and 157 at the same time. But if it's any consolation, I am actually THAT bad at math.

I'm terrible with math. I'm good with tech and that, so I'm not worried about 237, but I know if I want to get a high mark I'll have to still work hard. Even moreso now that Masri isn't teaching it, and his replacement is a CS prof that is apparently pretty mediocre (Maryam Ali). Calculus is gonna be my hard class I think. I'm also worried about microecon, since I didn't find macro all that easy. I've been considering just doing BUEC 232 in the spring, along with 207, CMNS 110 and maybe a CRIM class. Maybe I should stop trying to wait for an opening to appear and take it in the spring.

Why not insert some other electives that you need to take to sort of spread out the workload? WQB, etc.
  • edited August 2010
I don't really need any more electives, and I'm still undecided on what I want to minor in, so I want to give it some time to think about it.

My first two terms I did without even planning on doing business, so I finished all of my WQB already. All I need to do now is an upper-division writing (since one has to be lower, and one upper, but BUS 360W covers that). I just want to be able to apply to business ASAP so that I can use the spring term for retakes if I absolutely need to, since I'm doing co-op next summer.

If you know any good electives, I'm all ears. If a spot opens in CRIM 355 (Forensics), then I'm going to take that and wait and take BUEC in the spring.

232 and 157 at the same time?! Ouch. I'd personally push 232 into the semester AFTER 157. The linear algebra stuff in 232 is hard going without also trying to learn calculus for the first time.

Especially because linalg profs seem to have a habit of teaching it in a very abstract way that doesn't concretize it very well.

Sorry, shoulda clarified. BUEC 232, not MATH 232. :P

Spot finally opened for BUEC 232 at Surrey campus, and I decided to go for it and try to get into business this term. Wish me luck, this is definitely gonna be my toughest term so far!

Good luck man. I wanted a spot too, but my schedule is already tough, so I will take it in the Spring.

All the best and keep us (me) :p updated on the class. Most people seem to say it's not too bad.

Thanks! I contemplated doing it in the spring, because I know this will be a challenging term, but I'm cool with getting down to the grind and working hard this term as long as it lets me apply for my transfer into business for Spring entry. Will take BUS 207 and maybe 254 in the spring now.

And I will let you know, since Zhang is teaching all three sections of the class next term. I've also heard it isn't bad at all, but the class average on exams is normally pretty high. High averages suck in curved classes :\
