Hey, I'm going into SFU this upcoming fall. I'm commuting though, but still want to get the university experience. What are some good ways to do that in a commuter situation?
I'm in the same situation, and I felt the same way coming in. But it isn't that hard.
My biggest recommendation is to join clubs. Join any club that interests you. Clubs Day is from Tuesday to Thursday September 14-16, so go look around, talk to some people, and see what type of clubs interest you. I've made a few friends from tutorials and that, but the majority of the friends I've made has been through clubs.
definitely get involved with clubs, and hang out in social places like the mountain shadow pub, cafeteria, maggie benston lounge, etc.
the first few weeks of the fall semester is the absolutely best time to meet new people... and by people i mean cute girls lol! definitely hit up the first pub night (which happens on thursday during the first 2 weeks of fall semester) at first everyone is looking to meet new people and jump into the university experience, but once september is over people start falling into their school routines and become less social
the most effective choice would probably be to make friends in your labs and tutorials, where participation is expected... that way you make friends that you can have chill with and do your homework with too
hmm.. correct me if i'm wrong but how to get the university experience while you're commuting to SFU is your question right?
if that's the case then it's gonna be a bit difficult.. considering most students who commute either sleep on the bus or plug their ears with le ipod.. and if you attempt to strike a conversation they might think you're a weirdo.. =x
There's this cute chick I always see in my 145 bus down the hill and to Surrey central. Obviously I like her. I was sending signals and I think she was too, because every now and then I would catch one/two stares from her. Or maybe not. I guess our female talksfuers can help explain what that might mean.
Anyway this repeated itself for the first 1 1/2 months of this summer. Every time I see her on my bus, her iPod automatically cockblocks me. And every time, it eliminates the little amount of game I have and I only end up going home regretful and saying "fuck I shoulda done this/that", "fuckin steve jobs and his iCockblocker", etc. Well anyway the one time she wasn't on her iPod, she was on the phone. I didn't feel like giving up that easily this time however. I had to get a name or number somehow and get some summer lovin for myself. So I took a piece of paper and wrote:
"You're on the phone the one time you're not on your iPod. I just want your name =) - online predator. "
(lol that would've been really funny if I actually wrote down "online predator")
So I went to come after her (from behind her btw coming from behind is not a good idea when you want a chick's attention). I said, "Hey," she turned around, "I just wanna give you this." I reached out my arm to hand her the folded note. She was prolly shocked of this because, for the longest 5 seconds, she stopped the phone conversation and just stared at me before switching her attention to the note in my arm and taking it from my grasp. Then I said, "thanks see ya" And I proceeded on my own little merry way hoping to get her number soon.
She has not responded yet.
Although as a side note: This trick worked once. So for now it's 50-50 effective =D
The 145 up the hill is the most depressing place to be, ever. Everyone has a look of eternal suffering on their faces and if you make a slight noise, the whole bus turns around to look at you. It was pretty hilarious when I fell on that tiny asian girl once though.
it's an interesting experience, you can make a lot of observations, but it gets tiring very quickly. I think most people pretend to fall asleep/put their head down on their bags so others won't look at them.
the question is, why is everyone so reclusive on the bus and skytrain? in an ideal world that would be the perfect place to socialize and meet new peeps... unfortunate
because people are afraid of rejection. and rejection results to bus-wide humiliation especially when there's no means of escape except wait for the bus to get to sfu lol.
edit:
This is actually true wherever you are. The trick is to use this to your advantage. A personal quote to live by: Give a fuck and don't give a fuck. Give a fuck about, and then hopefully fuck, your target chick, and don't give a fuck about the people around you. You're one step closer to that hot mamasita than the guys around you just sitting around staring and thinking who knows what.
I sound like I'm a pro or somehting. I'm not lol. I have my own personal cockblockers: I'm broke, a fob, and in computing science. Living with my parents used to be a part of that list, but not anymore.

They don't call it the loser cruiser for no reason ;)
