Any good electives this summer?

edited May 2010 in General
Anyone know of good electives this summer? I was thinking about CMPT 165 in Surrey with Harinder Khangura, but I'm not sure how time-consuming it would be. How long do the assignments and stuff take to do (for someone with a bit of HTML, but no Python)? Also, for CMPT 165, how much time needs to be put in for studying for the final? I want to make sure I have adequate time to prepare for such an exam so I don't absolutely bomb it. I have MATH 157 and BUEC 232 also this summer, so I want a class that I won't have to worry about as much, but I'm willing to put the work in if needed.

Or any other recommended electives would be appreciated. Thanks ;)

if you already have a bit of html the first half of the course will be no work at all. Harinder is a pretty cool guy and good prof. Some people seem to struggle to learn programmnig concepts apparently, as seen in all the cmpt165 threads on this forum, but it's fairly basic, and imo it shouldn't be too hard, and should definitely be easypie next to calc and whatever buec 232 is.

i took 165 by dist ed but already knew most of the stuff, so i'm probably not the best source on this. also, the final mostly consisted of writing out html and/or pointing out errors in given code, as well as some basic design stuff, if I recall correctly.

I`m taking POL101 via Distance Ed. I was going to take a Computing course, but everyone I talked to recommended for me to drop it. Anyone taken POL101?

I took POL 100 in class in the fall. It is identical to 101W, but I dunno differences between in-class and DE.

We had a 35% research paper, 35% final, 15% midterm and 15% tutorial attendance/participation. The research paper wasn't actually that bad. It looked intimidating at first, since it was my first term and it was by far my biggest paper to write (8-10 pages). But I chose an enjoyable topic and just ran with it and ended up with an A on it. Final and midterm were a few multiple choice questions and then an essay or two. M/C questions were easy, but the essay part for the midterm I thought was really hard (because I didn't study much for it). Final was easy all-around. I ended up with a B+, but could have had an A- if I studied for the midterm, since I only got 60% on it.

Ah, that's good! 8-10 pages is pretty easy. I'm not great with exams but I rock with term papers so that's great to know. Thanks!

human sexuality hsci 120 just opened up lol

I wanted to take that, but will have to do it another time. I don't want to take an Intersession class while taking three regular summer term classes.

I finalized my schedule today though. MATH 157, BUEC 232, ECON 105, ENGL 102W. Fun stuff >_>

how come? one class you're totally done with earlier... making the other ones the primary focus?
  • edited May 2010
Yeah, but the fact that it takes up six hours a week of lectures is worth noting, as it would conflict with a lot of other courses. Also, it's double the work in half the time.

    its a course about sex....

lol.... i have the book, theres a whole chapter on sex toys... this is a huge blow off class.

There is also a chapter on sexually transmitted diseases, etc.. this cant be that hard.

its at 4:20 - 6 or 7.. nothing should conflict time wise.

Cmpt165 was really easy. To be honest, I think it's a waste of time and money for CS majors. I don't know what major you're in, but I don't think it'll benefit you either way. You work with HTML and Python.

I have taken a class with Khangura, and he's an incredibly good professor. Very helpful notes, and is very patient with his students. His assignments are typically harder than his exams, and is definitely a good challenge. I can probably take a 3-months course with him that discuss how paint drys and I would still enjoy it. You seem like a really good student, so you will definitely enjoy this course with him.

The CMPT165 class I took was super easy. I think our class average hovers around 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999 percent. You can do an assignment 30 seconds before it's due and pull off an A+. You can study for the exam 1 minute before and pull of an A+. But I think a few people on this forum failed this course. The easiness of this course is an hotly debated issue on here for some reason. I think it's the Python part that throws people off. Logics is programming is hard to wrap your head around, but once you do, it's easy and really fun to do. It's not like some other subjects where reading a bit allows you to understand it, it takes time.

Also, I love Python. I will gladly help you if you need. I have tons of resources as well.

Thanks for the offer. I decided against it for this term, since I decided to take ECON 105 and they conflict with each other, but I will definitely look into taking it as an elective in the future.

CMPT 165 is not a cure-all. Some people just don't understand basic programming theory, or find linking the python and the HTML to be such a clusterfuck their assignment gets all snarled up in a knot.

    Etc and ad infinitum.

If anyone is dead set on taking 165 there are PDFs of one of the texts floating around. Read it, if you think you can comprehend it, take the course.

I was reading part of the Python book online and thought I would never be able to figure that out.

If I take it sometime, it would definitely have to be in-class.

It takes time. You have to play around with Python quite a bit to get it. I took cmpt120 which works with Python the entire course and it took me almost 2 months to get it. Cmpt165 doesn't work with that stuff until the last 3 weeks of class or so (for my class anyways), so you'll have plenty of time. Less than half our class are CS majors, and our class average was still really high. I guess it depends on your professor.

Ya, I wanted to but I changed my schedule so I don't think it would work anymore :) Maybe next semester!

There's also SCI 300 which is a survey course for non-science majors.
