Is there anyone who did opt out of Rec Fees?

edited December 2009 in General
I wanna opt out of Rec & Athletic Fee and Student Activity Fee for next semester.

I heard that I can opt out of Rec fees at the Rec office.

Is it true?

As far as I know, you can opt out of Healthcare and UPASS, but I haven't heard anyone being able to opt out of the Rec fees, as it is one of the required fees.

Rec fees include things like use of library services, access to the Peak, etc. Whether you make use of recreational services up at school while you're attending classes ON CAMPUS, it's impossible to monitor, and that is why the recreational fees are a "must."

There's more information at this website: Tuition and Fees

    Then.. What about Athletic Fee?
I dont go to the gym. this is why i wanna opt out of Athletic Fee.
i heard someone really opted out of Athletic Fee.

    Check this out : http://talksfu.ca/showthread.php?t=6451

If there is a way to opt out, I'd do it.
UG Rec & Athletic Fee 2010 Spring 64.36

The student activity fee sucks too, but at least it's more justifiable since it's going to things that I actually use in some cases - i.e. I read the peak. But I haven't gone to work out at the gym once since 2006. Why should I have to pay 64 bucks a semester in Rec and Athletic fees? I don't consider wanting to save 64 bucks as being cheap. That adds up.

I would've saved $514.88 so far (7 full time semesters plus 32 bucks x 2 for coop semesters).

Don't tell me I should just go to the gym to get my money's worth. There's a gym room right in my apartment that's more convenient if I felt the desire, and I prefer to get my exercise outside.

the peak, radio, etc are under student activity fees, not rec fees.

"really that cheap?" ? you like getting taken advantage of then ?

this shouldn't even be an issue; we should be able to opt-out on the website of all of this stuff. or more appropriately opt-in. half of what we're funding doesn't deserve to exist.

and we're not even talking about tuition fees...

    2009/11/17 UG Rec & Athletic Fee 2010 Spring 64.36
2009/11/17 UG Student Activity Fee 2010 Spring 62.14
2009/11/17 UG Student Services Fee 2010 Spring 38.62

so i'm giving $165.12 a semester for nothing.

what is our supposed student council or whatever this election is i see all the time doing? just raising these fees? wasn't the radio station fee raised a semester or two ago? what a joke. that's really helpful, thanks guys.

how about some transparency and actually helping students? yeah i'm passing the buck myself i know. everyone passing the buck except the people who are taking advantage of us being too lazy.

does anyone know what the black hole that is student services is used for or if it's possible to get it back? i assume it's for computer services or the like. the website is nicely unhelpful about it.

or how about getting the SFSS fee? can we get that back?

but then we're all too apathetic to really do anything about this i'm sure. myself included! though i will be trying to get these fees back during the semester.

please anyone report anything concrete you find out.

I don't think opting out of Rec is possible.

Come on man, how much do you spend every semester on Redbull and junk food? If you are serious about saving, you should stop buying those crappy foods in SFU's vending machines. Just think about it....I don't think 64.36 for only 4 months will deplete your account so colossally..
  • edited December 2009
that 64.36 is almost as much as I spend in 4 months :(

i buy no pop or fast food at all. i buy only what i need to survive.
this isn't a tiny amount of money to lots of people.

and really, the principle of the matter is a good enough reason. i am just throwing away the money, and i'm sure there are a great deal who do the same out of the feeling they can't do anything about it or it's just not worth fighting over.

On the topic of tuition fees...

I had 4 business courses and it was 2300. I added another business course (same as the others, just seminars) and BAM my tuition shot up to $3500.

    ONE COURSE MADE 1200 DIFFERENCE!???

    Like WTF. :(

Ya folks should be thankful as least the tuition here is that low, some US state schools charges 20k for a year.
  • edited December 2009
They don't know some are paying crazy fees while others, the disadvantaged, don't even have food to eat. Let alone, school. So, we better connect dots and place ourselves in the shoes of those who can't afford to go to school.

    Hope that helps...LoL

but as members of this forum have repeated time and time again.. school and especially post secondary education isn't for everyone.. if you can't afford to go to school then you just can't.. but this doesn't negate the fact that we're being charged outrageous fees.. as with vonnie's case.. are you implying that $1200 for one class is cheap? seriously?

Aren't those private? McGill is going private next year I think, and they're charging the same rate as well.

You can get $20 back from the Peak by going to their office. Whether or not $64 is a lot is all relative. My monthly spending last month is $800, but I went nuts with some social outings.

And maybe your rich Hope, but $1200 for a course is a shit ton of money. My CS course is around $500 and I have a hard time handing over my credit card.

Well hello. Student's are made of money.

Considering my other enrolled business seminars totaled $2300ish... which makes each course around $500 not including student fees... how can that ONE course be so much!?

    =(

Ahh. The ole sneak-a-grand-in-their-fees-and-hope-noone-notices. Tricky one.

$165 over 4 months, which requires only roughly 10 working hours over 4 months to cover, I'm sure plenty of students can manage that.
If you can't, then invest in yourself and find a better paying job.

Don't think it's really a matter of being able to afford it or not. I could eat something with that money.
  • edited December 2009
^ agreed.. that $165 could be invested elsewhere when you don't even use the services offered by the rec centre..
  • edited December 2009
it's an inelastic cost of being a student.
