First year course selection

edited September 2009 in General
I am a first year science student and I could use some advice for first term~

Math 151 or skip to math 152? (I took Calc AP test and got 5)

physics 101 or eng 102 (which do u think is less work?)

Any electives or 'GPA boosters' you'd like to suggest?

Thx.

You definitely need more classes because that's too light for a first semester in my opinion.

Physics 101 is HS Physics basically. Weekly assignments.

I don't know what getting a 5 in the calc AP test means, but Math 151 and 152 is basically Calc 12 if you've taken it in high school. Math 151 goes from calc intro to calculating volumes whereas Math 152 starts off with integrals. BOth classes give weekly assignments.

For GPA boosters, I would recommend any of these to add to your semester CMPT 100, 120, 165. Pretty easy stuff if you've done some HS programming. Philosophy intro classes aren't so bad either. There's one CRIM class which I heard is super easy but I forgot what it was.

Of couse not everyone agrees with my list.

i suggest you take at least 4 coures in your first semester if you don't work, or work for > 16 hours a week.. During my first year, i took 5 courses with no work and that was a decent workload.

+ i would take either a b-hum or ay WQB course, like iat/hum/eng/geo and get it over with first. Iat is probably all full, so i suggest taking hum 102 or 104...

Just don't slack off, first year-second year is easy IMO, there really is no need for 'GPA booster' classes unless you are really desprate to not get AP.

Since you are in sciences and you seem bright, I would suggest a load like:

    Math152
    Chem121
    Phys101
    Bio101

That is a typical first science semester and it should keep you busy if you are full time school and no working or part time working

thx for ur help and yeah I am taking 4 classes but the other two I had no problem with so...

I practically forgot everything from calc 12/AP lol so u guys don't think jumping right into 152 isnt a real problem? Is difficulty for 151 and 152 about the same?

I thought 151 was easier. But then it depends if you're better at integrals or derivatives.

If you're not confident about your calc 12, you might as well take Math 151 for now as 152 expects you to understand 151 material already.

Since you've taken the Calc AP test and got a 5, I would suggest taking Math 154 or Math 157 unless you really need Math 151.
Most people that took Math 151 have been complaining about how hard the course is when really their program also allowed 154 and 157. Unless those people are really dumb or lazy then I guess you could go for 151.

For biology, go for either Bisc 102 first or take both 101 and 102 together.

Take Eng 103, it's the easiest imo. Only hard thing is deciphering plays... =/
