edited August 2009 in General
Will our U-pass work on Canada line or will we have to pay extra?

    Pretty sure it's applicable.

Kevin: As far as I know, yes, U-Pass holders do pay the addfare."

I think she is a representative for translink that responds to forum questions. The addfare is only from richmond to the airport. Our U-Passes will be good for the rest.

I believe first year is free, and after that it'll be like the westcoast express.

well, without any system to keep in check who's going where, free trips to airport for all! unless there are people who are designated to check the fares at the airport.

    just to back up justinbh2:

    Paying Your Canada Line Fare

Standard TransLink fares apply. Tickets and passes are valid for travel on TransLink buses, SeaBus, and SkyTrain’s Expo and Millennium Lines as well as Canada Line.

YVR Add Fare – Free Trial Until 2010

The Canada Line YVR AddFare applies to travel between Bridgeport Station and any of the three stations on Sea Island (Templeton, Sea Island Centre and YVR-Airport).
The AddFare is expected to take effect in 2010 and further details will be posted here when available.

Sucks to be those who are travelling in the colder months of the year, they will probably have to stand there with all their luggage to wait for a transfer trolley from bridgeport to YVR

hey this is an update on the canada line. My dad works for the company responsible for the testing and operations of the canada line so i hve the scoop on it.

Official opening to the public is August 17th. It's free to ride from 1- 9pm. :D
Standard translink fees are applicable on the canada line.

Fees for transit to the airport? As if the $100 dollars in taxes for a flight wasn't already enough?! Seriously, I just bought a roundtrip ticket to Calgary...Air Canada charged $178 total...but with taxes it came to $272.

Translink and YVR are entirely different entities, why would translink give you free access to the YVR?

Pretty much Translink is forcing this fee on the Airport Authority. YVR is fighting tooth and nail to cancel it, so I wouldn't be surprised if the proposed fee doesn't materialize next year.

Is the whole skytrain line (including the Canada Line) not owned and operated by translink? Or is the YVR station owned/operated by the airport?
  • edited August 2009
It's all operated by translink, although I'm not sure of who owns the airport station, although I'm pretty sure its all public infrastructure.

No other large cities in the world offer free transit to the airport, so I don't see why Vancouver would... you shouldn't be surprised

Do other cities have anything like the UPass though? I would not expect Translink to offer free transit to the airport for everyone, but I think the Upass should cover transit to the airport since it covers everywhere else on the skytrain line. The Upass does not have to offer free transit to other places, for example, downtown vancouver, but isn't that kind of the point of the Upass in the first place?

why wouldnt you want the upass to cover downtown vancouver.....? it would be insanely hard for translink to even try to monitor that. also, sfu has a vancouver campus...

Other cities have vastly different transit services, and places with better transit like london or paris do not have something exactly like our u-pass.

What does going to the airport have to do with you being a student? Unless you live at the airport there really is no relevance. As the person mentioned above, there is a downtown campus, so it would make sense the u-pass offers travel there. And that isn't even exactly why. The u-pass is three zone transit to cover people who LIVE in the outlying areas, like downtown or richmond.

I've been to cities where I had to cab from the airport so you should be grateful there is a low-pay option you can take.
