Ling 100 Yourie Pankratz

edited August 2009 in General
Anyone taking his course or took his course know what his final exam is like? His only suggestion to study is study lecture note, lecture, CC, and textbook.... That's too broad, anyone know what his final is like and stuff?
His ling 110 has way more exercises, but ling 100.... so ya..

i had him for during spring 2008... i got an easy A in that class...
i didn't bother buying the textbook or CC cuz i heard they were useless...

just studied his notes and past exams!

his exams are almost worded exactly the same as his notes...

and past exams can be bought (yes, legally) from a student club call CSU (Chinese student union) for like... 50 cents to a dollar each....

the past exams are from 1998 -2000, but 30-40% of the exam questions are found (in EXACT wording) in his past exams!!

if it's too late to get past exams (which IS too late if you still havn't went to the CSU booth) ...just study the notes REALLY hard... he likes to ask questions where u hv to "list" things out.... and briefly describe each of them...

    hope this helps~

p.s. for future reference... visit the CSU booth (located somewhere in the main hallway of AQ) a couple of weeks before your MTs or Finals and see if you can find any matching past exams in their exam bank! it's useful and cheap =)

By the way, do you know why he keeps on mentioning to study CC and textbook even though it's mostly about the notes? That's the only suggestion he gives on studying for the exam = =...

well.. his notes are somewhat based on the textbook... and the textbook is really really hard to read (that's what i found)... i am not sure why he stresses it so much, maybe he changed his testing style? but i remb he told us to study the textbook&CC too, i went to the first midterm just memorizing the notes (thinking i wont do that good) ...but at the MT i recognized everything and did really well...

it's not an SUPER easy course, cause there is a fair bit to memorize... there aren't any "trick" questions, no "application" questions... just word for word definitions and listing... so just make sure you are able to do that on the exam and you are fine... u should be able to find the answer to every question just in the notes...

    good luck~

i took 110 with him.. opposite to "Juicy" I actually used the textbook 99% of the time. his notes were basically word examples from the textbook.

i had him for both 100 and 110.

like juicy said, 100 was all about memorizing. i did OK despite the fact that i didnt study for it at all. if you try to listen in class, you know half the stuff from his exams.

for 110, it was all about understanding. i didnt read the textbook at all and just did the practice exams and paid attention in class and got a descent mark.
