CMPT 307, 354, and 371 workload.

edited August 2009 in General
How heavy and time-consuming would the combination of these 3 courses be? My main concern is whether or not I can manage to put in at least 20 hours of work per week.

ahhh Ke Wang is pretty bad... just reads from notes (which are not even his) assignments are from other schools ... and so on
i went to office hours a few times for cmpt 454 with him and it was NOT useful...

i dont know Ayse Ergun so i cant comment

cmpt 300 has quite a bit of reading involved so be prepared

I have a similar question as well, just wondering what the course load for Stats 270, Macm 316, Cmpt 354 and Cmpt 320 is?

^ overall its doable semester, the only challenging part is going to be macm 316 and understanding wtf Ke Wang is trying to re-explain in 354 :P

cmpt 320 = easy, i had it with Robert Hadley. just need to memorize all his notes
stats 270 = mostly math12 with some new stuff... not very difficult
macm 316 = considered one of the hardest classes @ sfu , heck i know teachers at sfu who didnt get comp sci degrees because of this class ;)

I heard 307 is quite heavy so those 3 courses are enough of a work load, 307 and 300 esp. You're gonna have a busy semester if you wanna do well in 300 with bart.

Ke Wang is pretty easy if you're worried about the workload.

There's only 2 assignments and one project. One assignment a month and each one takes like 4-5 hours to do. Each assignment has only about 5-6 questions and are relatively easy. Even if you don't get the question, you get marks for trying.

The project is easy too, you only need to connect to the database they provide and display some queries.

Thanks! I have been warned by the advisor a couple of times that I'd better not take 300 & 307 at the same time. :secret: And I am still on the wait list for CMPT 300. :omg: For some reason I have to take both of them.

Just wondering how busy it would be in 300 with Bart?

CMPT 300 with Bart is 100% reading the book to catch up with the lessons and another 100% with the programming part.

We had 5 assignments, each split into two parts: written and programming (on linux) and they're not your easy breezy programming like the other profs. In my experience, you'll constantly need to rely on two resources: the book assigned and the whole fakking internet. And don't miss a class!

But that was my experience. I took this class without any previous experience with linux and most of the material was new stuff to me. But I succeeded and learned a lot!

Brad is one of the hardest profs around in my opinion, but also one of the best in terms of actually learning the material. I would choose his classes over any other prof for as long as my other courses are light. That's probably why your advisor suggested against taking 300 and 307 simultaneously.

Also, if you're consistent with the reading, you'll find that his midterms and finals are so much easier compared to the assignments he give.
