Anyone Apply for Business?

edited August 2009 in General
I did and I thought I was going to get in but they jacked up the GPA. Its total bs, they have had the GPA between 2.87-2.90 for the last nine semesters and suddenly they raise it to 2.95!
http://business.sfu.ca/bba/the-program/applying/requirements/past-gpa-reqs.php

Also they haven't increased it by more then .02 in the last three years but this semester it went from 2.90 to 2.95. I'm soo pissed off right now cause I worked my ass off to get my GPA to 2.92 thinking it would be safe. Is there any way to appeal this?

yea the shitty thing is I had 2.89 two semesters ago and they cut it off at 2.90. im sure if I get 2.95 for next semester they'll raise it to 3.00

Well even if you appeal it, if they only accept x amount of people in those with the higher GPA will still only get entry...I think you're out of options.

Also, no offence or anything, but with a GPA below 3.0 (and if you tried hard for that) I think you'd get destroyed in business, where the competition and curving is brutal... Some of the people I know in business are the most study-hard people who hover near 4.0

It only gets brutal in upper level courses. I find that the curve works for you, given that you do the work and don't slack off, in lower level courses.

As long as you work a little harder than the person beside you then you should be okay. haha.

my friend applied the past semester and was told in a letter to remain his CGPA above 3.0

    i agree with randomuser,
it's only gonna get more competitive in the upper-division courses; if you are having a tough time trying to get a CGPA to GET INTO the faculty of business, you will have a tough time staying in.

    i'm a second-year business student myself,
and more than half the people that i have met in business-related classes are either trying to get into the faculty or considering it in as joint-major.
if you can't manage to pull a high enough CGPA to get into the faculty, maybe you should reconsider if the faculty is really suitable for you
if you think it is, maybe try harder :)

    he applied the past semester...
i dont understand why you are accusing me (or my friend) lying about the letter saying he was required to maintain a CGPA above 3.0

if you're applying to minor in business, are the cgpa cutoff and criteria the same as if you were applying to major in business?

Well I just wanted to update that I got into business with 3.02 GPA. Anyways I just wanted to comment on how ignorant this comment is. Alot of my friends that are in business are around 3.0 GPA and some are below 3. And as for getting destroyed in business, i got an A- in BUS 207 which many people believe is the hardest course in the BBA. Also I didn't find the curving and competition tough at all, in fact almost 65% of people in business classes get a B regardless of % in the course. I took two 3rd year courses after the deadline for non business and found it easy to beat the curve and get at least a B.

no surprise on the high GPA for business. I guess it's to simulate the high competitive nature of business and the large demand of students trying to get in. I was thinking of applying myself but even if i was close to meeting the requirement i doubt i'll get in due to the large number of ppl applying and their GPA.

Yeah, the jump was even bigger for this fall for those transferrring in directly from outside institutions... it used to be 3.20 so I figured I was fine with 3.45... and then it got jacked up to 3.50!

Faculty of Arts, here I come!!! hahaha

Arts is always the fall back plan haha

Your grades are only important in certain streams in Business, such as Accounting and Finance. Firms will actually look at grades when hiring. Those in Human Resources and Marketing are still okay if they're not acing classes.

I applied from SFU arts with a 3.34 from Kwantlen but because most of my courses were taken after Kwantlen became a university the dedcution was only .135. I was given early conditional acceptance.

SFU Business now has an internal (you're in another SFU faculty trying to get into Business) acceptance cGPA of minimum 3.0.
