The Key to Final Exams

edited December 2006 in General
After writing many exams over the years, I've learned to appreciate the skill involved. YES exam writing is a skill. Because of this, there are some people who recieve a higher mark than they really deserve while others recieve a lower mark than they deserve. One of the reasons for this, in my opinion, is that being able to study a whole semesters worth of notes and textbook readings in little over a week is no easy feat - especially for up to 5 classes at a time. While some students have mastered the strategy of studying, others go into final exams with a very haphazard approach. Understanding the purpose of a final exam and the resulting questions that will be asked is key to this strategy. Its all about the BIG PICTURE as opposed to specific details.

Anyways, thats my philosophy. After all the exams i've bombed...at least I learned that much. U guys have anything to dispute/add to this?

    I agree.

If you know the main concept and ideas, little things are worthless. For example, things you do in labs are pretty useless.

    i totally agree.

my strategy is to gain an understanding of all the topics of a course first. then, if i have time, go in-depth into certain topics that interest me.

that's what i did for history and english at least. i didn't dwell too much on things i didn't really know too much about, seeing as i only had so little time to get everything in my head, chances are i wasn't going to be a pro at those topics anytime soon anyway.

The key to final exams ... doing the work consistently over the semester so there is no need for cramming.

Agree with this 100% I remind myself every semester but somehow still end up leaving things till the last minute.
