Hey guys my family may be moving to Vancouver in the near future. What are some nice places to live around Burnaby?
Is Coquitlam a nice place, what are the crime rates like around there aswell?
Is there alot of gang trouble around there aswell?
Thanks guys!

you need to give us some specifics first.
do you like to live in a metro/busy downtown area or prefer places with access to the outdoors and less crowded?
got any food preferences?
do you have a monthly budget of how much you'd be spending on rent per month?
do you plan on buying a car or using public transit?
etc...?
once you give us an idea of he kind of place you want to live, then we can start giving suggestions :p
Coquitlam is nice too, especially the area around Westwood Plateau. It's kind of out of the way but super nice. Richard Gere has a house up there.
Well my family want somewhere suburban but still close enough to go to the city.
If they bought a house they would be spending C$400,000-460.
Good transport links would be essential, we would have a car aswell, and good bus services. Is it expensive to run a car in BC? Your fuel or
"gas" :teeth: is very cheap compared with UK prices.
Futhermore......
I also have some questions about university. I know this is the wrong forum but seeing as it is about accomodation I will say it here.
Is it normal in Canada for a student to live at home for the first year and then rent accomodation in second year- after they have made friends at university?
Odds are you won't find a house for that price... or you'll have a hard time. The housing market in BC is pretty pricey, though with the current economy prices have been going down.
Dunno about cars. Gas is around $1.10 per litre right now, and I don't know how to compare insurance rates with the cost in England.
As for University, especially SFU, the campus is largely a commuter campus. If I remember correctly there is only room for ~2,500 people in residence. Of course some people rent apartments and condos elsewhere, but I'm fairly certain most people live at home until the graduate. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.
ETA: Lots of buses going every direction, as well as close to 2 skytrain stations. I'm about 25-30 mins away from SFU by bus.
If you're looking for convenience in terms of transportation, living close to a skytrain station is pretty important. There are quite a few stations in Burnaby that have new apartments such as Gilmore, Holdom, and Brentwood (all of which are about 30 minutes away from SFU).
I have friends who live in Coquitlam and all of them say transit is a b!tch: few bus routes and infrequent trips. Going to SFU would probably take more than 45 minutes one way. Although I like the area..suburban, quiet, really "green" if that's your thing, I would say having a car would be a major plus for living out there.
Good luck!
One thing I always thought was really retarded is that it takes such a long time to get from Metrotown to SFU. You're in friggin Burnaby already, but nope, go through New West. Coquitlam and then SFU.
But I don't really follow football anymore or soccer
