Fall Semester Advice

edited July 2009 in General
Hey, I'm thinking of taking these courses in the fall, any feedback regarding how hard it'll be or how much work it'll require??

SA 100W
SA 101
SA 150
CRIM 135
(maybe CRIM 103...is five too much?)

With the first four courses, I'll only have to take two finals.

Thanks.

I've been told arts courses aren't hard to begin with.

Har har, you wouldn't make blanket statements if you took a variety of arts classes.

Anyway, what she said has an element of truth, I think first year arts classes largely are just testing your work ethic, rather than the difficulty of the material. I think you could take five classes, and if you can't you might want to re-evaluate how you spend your time and your work ethic.

SA 150, CRIM 135 and 103 are definitely doable. Not sure about SA 100W or 101 since I never took 'em.

Five courses are absolutely manageable if you have good study habits and keep up with the readings but if you are transitioning from highschool, the change in environment and pace may be a bit overwhelming. I took on four courses in my very first semester coming straight from highschool and I'm glad I only took four since my work ethic was crap and I did shit all. Up to you though and what you think you can handle.

5 courses were a breeze... and from experience these courses aren't hard at all.. but then again you gotta check out the profs too as some are much more lenient than others..

What was SA 150 like? Did you do it with Ann Travers?
I'm planning on taking that now but any info on it would be nice. ;)

    Ann Travers is very fair.

It really depends on how your high school work habits are.

In high school I dicked around a lot and found the transition quite difficult at first but then after that you get accustomed to how you manage your time, study, etc.

If you were a dedicated student in high school, spending lots of time studying (though I dont know why you would, its HS after all) and hardly went out, 5 courses should be fine. Also if you factor in the fact that you only have 2/4 finals so far, at most you would be having 3/5 finals, and that is not bad at all

LOVE Ann Travers! She made me love Sociology. The content in Sociology is also very current and relatable to everyday life. I was going to take a sexuality course with her this summer but it got cancelled, boo.

When I took it in Fall 07, there were two midterms and a final project. I ended up with a B in that course since I failed my second midterm... haha. But she is an excellent prof, definitely one of my favourites by far.

It'd be my second year, so it sounds like the 5 courses are doable. The most I've done so far is 4, so I was unsure how the workload would be.

I found SA100W to be dull and boring. Also a lot of the material was outdated. However, the work load isn't too bad. There was one essay and two small presentations. Although they may have changed the format of the class this semester

That's what I did too! I did 4x4x2 in my first year at SFU then I switched on to 5x5x1. Good luck!

Thanks, the only reason I'm thinking of doing five this semester is because I started out in Computer Science so I'm behind with getting a major in either Sociology or Criminology. I'm thinking of going back to 4 in the spring semester, and getting a co-op job in the summer.
