Das Gym Thread.

edited September 2009 in General
This thread is for finding people to work out with at the SFU fitness center (or other places in Vancouver I guess) and discussing the gym itself in general. Basic info can be found here.

Those of you hoping to find workout buddies quote and use the following format. It's more useful for huge threads with thousands of posts but I think it's better to be organized in general so there you go. You can use your real name too but considering how popular I am on this board I'm not going to. Here 'tis:

Name: Ferrous
Location: Vancouver/Burnaby
Training Facility of Choice: SFU Fitness Centre
Currently working on: Beginning cardio and weight lifting.
Looking for: Gym buddy for motivation to actually go and hopefully who sort of knows what they're doing so they can help me not be a huge idiot. Or someone else who's just starting out so we can both be idiots.
Contact: roadstarii [splat] gmail.com <- break up your email so web spiders don't get it, and remember that your sfu.ca address will show your name to anyone else with an SFU email.

Notes on general discussion: While I don't get the impression that many of you (all twelve that post here) are huge fitness freaks who are deep into supplements and diets and so on, try and keep the stupid protein debates out of here if possible. Huge spreadsheets of your workout schedule are a-ok. Oh, and anyone who knows should mention when the gym is least and most crowded. Goons also like to post before and after pictures of their fitness progress but that's weird as hell and probably weirder considering this crowd.

Okay, commence posting white noise and 4chan macros, hopefully someone will manage to sneak in something useful. Seriously when is it least crowded this is important.

i go monday to friday mornings.

starting this week i'll be focusing on my cardio and lower body strength because the last weekend i went to do the grind, it took me 1hr 45mins and puked halfway through.. so i gotta get myself back in shape like fuck

I go Monday and Friday afternoons. I usually do about 20 minutes of Cardio then do 30 minutes of weights
  • edited June 2009
Part of my rowing training is weights which I do M/W/F. It's always the same, five minutes of warmup on the erg to break a sweat, ten minutes of stretching and then 35-45 minutes of working out, no hypertrophy, all strength conditioning.

There are so many gym rats at the SFU gym it is unbelievable, as well it is ridiculous how little people have any respect for gym etiquette and how little people actually know about working out.

I have a crazy workout that I stick to.

Every day I run 3km twice a day (morning before heading to school and evening before diner) ~20mins per run

I do heavy weights M/W/F and intense cardio T/Th. I'm usually there mid morning

I limit my time in the gym to MAX 1hr

    What's gym rat?
  • edited June 2009
One who spends entirely too much time partaking in muscle building, strength training, cardiovascular, or aerobic activity. Specifically, one who does so at a health club or gym.

They are the guys (and girls too, there's a gym rat girl that works at the fitness centre) who you can label as a douchebag. Usually wearing tight tank-tops, flexing whenever, only caring about how their body looks while chugging down the protein shakes.

Yeah, I've seen you in the gym a few times, occasionally nodding to you. Limiting your time in the gym to an hour is what people *should* be doing, but a lot of people seem to think that the more time in the gym you spend the better it is for your body. There's a point of diminishing return where you no longer gain anything from working out. If you tear too much muscle it takes longer than your day off to heal it so you are only injuring yourself. yet there are still loads of people who are in the gym for hours a day, every day working out.

I'm at the gym quite a bit but I work out mostly at Fitness World as opposed to the SFU gym since it's super close to my house and I'm usually at the gym for roughly 1 hour on average, including stretching and cool down.

Sunday: cheerleading practice @ Omega Gymnastics; mostly stunting but hardcore conditioning for 30min at the end
Monday: cardio kickbox (pre-cardio/cardio using 1lb wrist weights and abs) + 10min stretching
    Tuesday: weights and circuit training
    Wednesday: cardio kickbox
    Thursday: cheer practice
    Friday: weights and circuit training
    Saturday: cardio kickbox

And I hate gym rats too! I forgot how long it is, but after a certain amount of time (2 hours?) don't you either stop burning calories or building muscles? It's so annoying whenever I hear my friends, especially my guy friends, saying they were "working out" for like, 3 or 4 hours at the gym. Part of me tells me that they're not even doing a proper workout. Oh well.

I see. I agree. 1hr, 1-1/2 hr max. Take a day off to rest and recovery, repeat.

Though I must say, protein shakes or energy drinks are silly, water is all you need for 1 hr.
  • edited June 2009
It's not a set amount of time before working out is useless, it is how much you do in that time. But yes, usually around an hour to 1.5 hours is the max you should do. Working out for 3 or 4 hours is also going to be useless, that is unless you have enough rest time by your next workout.

I do suggest giving a day off to recover between workouts, but if you spend an hour on your trunk muscles on Monday, it is fine to work on, say, your leg muscles on Tuesday. If you do all your muscles on Monday, wait till Wednesday for your next weights workout.

Also, *definitely* drink water when working out, both during and after and before. Dehydration is definitely bad for you.

Also, technique, if you don't have proper technique then don't bother working out since all you are going to do is hurt yourself. Don't arch your back when doing weights and don't bounce when you stretch.

In no way do I claim to be a fitness expert, I just do two workouts a day for rowing and I have a coach who explains the "whys" to me so I have enough knowledge to know how to workout safely.

And if you want to start working out hardcore, you have to ease yourself into it, starting right away into a hardcore workout regime will definitely hurt you.

I don't go to the gym, but I run at least an hour a day, and a climb up grouse grind every morning. I've been doing this for a few days, and it feels great. I don't have classes anymore, and my hours at work are getting cut, so I have a lot of free time.

whats strength conditioning? is it similar to tabata(its kind of similar to interval training but with front squats, power cleans, barbell complexes, etc.)?
Hypertrophy is making your muscles bigger while strength conditioning is making your muscles stronger.

Hypertrophy is when you do a number of short reps like 3x 8-12. Strength conditioning is where you can do the same weights but you do something like 1x20. This invokes an aerobic part into your workout as your muscles will be working as hard as if you were taking part in a sport and using them. In summary, it just makes you stronger.

what do you do for your heavy lifting? like squats, deadlift and such?

Well I do what JayDub just explained. Hypertrophy.

I usually go with a friend and we spot/help push each other. 3 sets of 10 reps of a heavy weight (say for flat bench chest like 90lb dumbbells)

I just say heavy lifting because I push myself everyweek. I have weight goal every week and I push to do that. Say 90's one week, 95's the next ect.

Its hard to explain, no pain no gain.

yea i know what hypertrophy is. i dont get the 1x20 part of your training and how it would be beneficial to rowing. Wouldn't 1-3 reps be much more beneficial to maximal strength and power output especially during the last 500m or so? I would also bet that 1x20 would cause more hypertrophy than 1-3 especially if your on a calorie surplus diet.
It's not just the last 500 m of a race that matters, in rowing you have to take the lead and hold that lead for the entire race. By doing 1x20 I am putting my muscles into a situation where they are facing the same type of force that they would be used in during a race. I also don't want to do hypertrophy as I am not necessarily getting stronger, but I am definitely gaining bigger muscles which in cause weight more meaning I am pulling more weight while not necessarily being as strong as I can be.

Would you like to make a post about etiquette? That's mostly what I worry about; the exercise itself is simple enough (I'm doing one-on-one sessions to get my shit together). So far my etiquette list looks like this:

    1. Sign in for machines.
    2. Spray and wipe down machines when you're done.
    3. Re-rack free weights when finished*
    4. For the love of god don't look at anyone.

I'm surprised how many of you go to the gym regularly. Maybe I will finally see one of you IRL (and subsequently get punched in the face).

*I don't actually use any free weights yet but I'm going to go out on a limb here.

Everytime I go to the gym theres always guys who have these huge upper bodies but have chicken legs. So unproportioned.

I bet those gym rats can't even run a block or a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing.

That's all you do need to do. You would be surprised how many people don't do that.

You can add to the list though:

    5. Don't grunt and groan, I don't need to hear how you sound as you crank one out.

    edit:

    6. Also, if you don't know the technique to do something, ask someone. Nothing is worse than watching someone try and do something improperly. You are probably going to hurt yourself and bad technique does not help you better yourself.

    @ chewbacca

A main reason for why I as a rower don't do hypertrophy is that it does not allow me to develop my lactic acid threshold which is tres important for me.

post a pic of urself lol

what a lot of gym newbies do is not breathe properly...
they usually hold it which means less oxygen to ur muscles = lactic acid builds up faster, and u get low reps
dont be embarrased to breathe a little loudly, just dont start grunting

This is the hard one for me because I don't really want to interrupt someone in the middle of their workout. I also don't want to ask the wrong person and get bullshit advice. If there's any general tips about who to approach or when to approach them (I'm thinking in the middle of a 400lb dead lift is probably a bad time) I'd like to hear them.

I don't think so. Maybe I'll PM one to someone if they decide they want to meet up, but I don't really want IVT tracking me down and spraying me with holy water so I'm going to keep pics to a minimum for now.

Edit: Gonna head up in a bit probably be there around 3:30 or so.

lol so are saying you're just the typical douche bag behind a monitor then?
i very much doubt any of the forum members would do shit in person to any other forum members. that sort of aggression would be a tad too much esp over this type of medium.

ill prob be at gym sometime between 5 - close

Well, not to sound like an idiot, there is a guy (and sometimes a girl) who sits at a desk downstairs near the free weights and they are bored. Their job is to answer questions people have on how to do stuff and they will answer. They even have a sign that says, "feel free to ask me questions on ..." and then they list a number of possible questions.

These people will be your best bet, they know what they are talking about and they are willing to help.

Who the fuck else would I be? I'm not genuinely worried about getting beat down by people from the internet, I just try to keep my online life separate from my real one.

Oh wow. I am definitely an idiot, I was completely unaware of the downstairs desk. I will have to find it next time and ask why the so-called "vertical press" is horizontal.
