Bus Drivers on Cellphones

edited June 2009 in General
Do you think that bus drivers should be allowed to be on their cell phone while they are driving? It seems kind of distracting and unsafe considering how many people's safety is on the line. On the other hand, these guys run the same routes over and over so they probably know every turn and every light inside out. What do you guys think?

Too many idiots on the road, it doesn't matter how well you know the route if someone from Richmond is driving near you.

The also shouldn't be listening to mp3 players with both buds in.

My favorite bus drivers are the ones that do sudden stops at every single stop. The careen through the road, and even though someone pulls the bell early and gives them ample time to slow down to a stop--they don't.

I think there have been a few buses I rode on where people actually fell off their seats from the momentum of the sudden stop.

Jesus. Sometimes bus drivers have such a stinking attitude.

I find it hard to believe that they'd be allowed to use a cell phone while driving. I've seen them call their HQ a few times when the bus breaks, but that's understandable.

As for the headphones, I'd probably snap if I had to listen to traffic and annoying bus riders all day. Whatever keeps the drivers sane is fine with me.

You right, music is totally cool...we all listen to music when we drive as a way to entertain ourselves/relax etc so it's alright if bus drivers do the same. I have been surprised a few times though by bus drivers on cell phones. One guy was sitting on his seat talking away on his phone as people got on the bus and he didn't seem to care if anyone paid fare or anything (and it wasn't an SFU bus)...he wasn't paying attention AT ALL. Another time the driver was fighting with someone on the phone the whole way and it just seemed so unprofessional and not to mention unsafe...someone should do something before an accident happens.

@Lixie...one time a bus driver took a fast turn around a corner and this poor guy's grocerie's went sliding allll over the place lol...and another time I actually fell ON someone as I was getting on the bus lol...I had just paid my fare but the bus driver was already driving away and as I was looking for a seat he TURNED and I fell right on top of this kid loll noott fun

    LOL.....

isnt there some sort of statistic out there that shows how ppl are more prone to accidents on commonly used routes due to a lack of attention?

Bus drivers are bitter a-holes. It's public service, so technically I can't really blame them.
  • edited June 2009
You think that's bad? I've seen bus drivers read the newspaper WHILE driving.

"Some one from Richmond"-That phrase is beyond the scope of this thread.

I am sorry that you cannot comprehend...

I will use simple English just for you, people in Richmond do not know how to drive.

If it is a matter of Engriish, take all the English with you. I know you can drive better than them. I think there are lots of poor drivers every where. Not specifically in Richmond. Above all, Richmond is still in Vancouver, BC.

Technically it's not in Vancouver... just the Greater Vancouver Area.

It's definitely a matter of "Engriish" if I have no clue what you are trying to say.

University is a place where you are expected to have a brain, use yours and stop expressing yourself like an idiot.

I like it when drivers abruptly stomp on the brake and you have some poor fellow standing at the top of the two steps trying to hold on for dear life. Or they fly forward superman style. Almost saw some guy 'superman' into my friends brother.

I'm pretty sure he gets it, in fact we all do and u bringing up this point in every thread is getting old.
University is also a place of diversity, we have exchange students from around the world and English may not be their first, second nor third language so give them a break. If u went on an exchange program to some other country where u could barely speak the language u would also have a hard time expressing your thoughts.
If u don't understand the post then either ignore it and move on or ask them to clarify. Insulting and pissing off the majority of the members sure as hell isn't going to improve their English nor the community.

EDIT: and by no means is my post directed to defend any particular member

Er...No. If you are at an English University, you are required to be able to communicate in English at a University level, regardless of where you come from. For example, I would expect someone at the University level to know how to spell the word "you".

The following is off Pearce's CMPT 320 homepage, and I think it's right on the money:

Students are expected to communicate in English at a level of proficiency that is becoming of an educated person - particularly, of a university student in upper division standing (please contact The Center for Research for Professional and Academic Writing in the English department for assistance). Remember, you are not working for a technical certificate. A university degree is a sign of "education," which entails both breadth of knowledge and acumen for communicating concepts.

Right. And if I barely spoke the language, I wouldn't expect to be able to get a University degree at an institution that offered education in that language. Of course, that becomes a problem that SFU is continually encouraging by admitting people who clearly can't communicate in English at a University level and taking 3 times the tuition money, in addition to charging them for FAL, etc...

For the record: English is not my first language (in case anyone wants to accuse me of being elitist with this post).

I never said anything about the person getting a degree from SFU. I also agree SFU should not hand out degrees to students who cant communicate properly. Furthermore, i agree with JayDub to some extent as it is frustrating trying to make sense of some posts that are written in poor English, but frustration alone should not lead to trash talking the person in every thread.

These people know their not the best English speakers. I'm also sure their marks reflect that (for example when i took CMPT 310 we lost 3-5% for every grammatical mistake on a test).
The few users who constantly nit pick at every post to pick out grammatical mistakes know the difference between constructive criticism and plain trash talking. My point is these individuals should take a chill pill and relax.

Anyways, I'm not going to respond to any more posts regarding this issue. If some of u see defending your own trash talking agenda as more important then common courtesy then by all means flame away.

btw not all drivers from richmond suck at driving. i'm assuming your playing off the stereotype that since Richmond is full of asians they must suck at driving. if thats the case, then thats a fairly ignorant and racist comment.

also i've seen plenty of white people who suck shit at driving as well so dont go thinking your king tut of the road just cause your white. also i've seen alot of shitty drivers of all ethnicities.

just like assholes, theres gonna shitty drivers from every country.

bus drivers are fairly aggressive in burnaby and vancouver but seem pretty laid back in richmond and new west. as for the OP they shouldnt be talkin on cellphones.

theres a difference between making racial jokes sporadically in a joking way

and saying rude things in a joking way on a consistent basis, which is what people are picking up on

when does it cross the line between a joking around and being a dick :P?

just because you joke about something doesnt mean you don't mean it, as you just admitted

i din't really catch up to the thread when i posted that. but in my defense, i think for a joke to be offensive or funny is entirely a matter of opinion.

well.. consistently making fun of someone who isn't a native english speaker isn't much of a joke to laugh about.. yes i agree that at a place of higher learning people should have a basic grasp of english such that they can properly convey their thoughts in a comprehensive manner.. but there will be people who are weaker in this area because it's not their mother language.. and i would rather have people correct their mistakes (if they're willing to) than to reply with non-constructive comments that offer no help at all.. simply put.. if you don't have anything good to say.. don't say it.. we don't need this negativity/bashing on talksfu..

Exactly Siuying...if you don't have anything positive or productive to say, don't say anything at all. Either move on to another thread or make your own thread about something you are interested in...no need to make senseless comments. Not only do you make yourself sound bitter but you ruin the ambiance of the community. This is not what talkSFU is about and is not what being a student represents.
