    Hi Jamie,

Welcome to TalkSFU. Just to introduce myself, I am Student0667. Studying abroad is definitely going to be a unique experience and one that you will never forget. In the mean time, just browse around forum and enjoy. If you got any questions regarding programs and any other matters, me and other members will help you out.

Will you be staying in Rez or living off campus?

    Sincerely,

    Student0667

The SFU-Zhejiang University Dual Degree Program? I don't think she is in the DDP program. First, looking at the SFU/ ZU Dual Degree Program site, Zhejiang University is in Hangzhou (杭州), Zhejiang Province whereas jamie is from Guangzhou (广州), Guangdong Province. Hangzhou and Guanzhou are two completely different place and they are 1345km apart...

Therefore, unless jamie is in the Computing Science program of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou and is here to do her two years abroad after finishing her Foundation Year, I don't think she is in the DDP program.

I dunno, I know almost nothing about China, except because of their highly censored internet I never want to go there.

How do you know Jamie is a girl? Prettty unisex name to me...

I was going to mention that. Desmond has definitely over-estimated the number of females on the internets. Remember, most people who claim to be women are 40-year-old men in their mother's basements.

Hey Jamie, welcome to talkSFU! I guess you've been trying to do some research before you actually head down here, which is a great idea. Whenever you have questions about local needs just ask and we will be happy to help answer your questions.

One of my old roommates was an International Student from China as well. He was slightly shy at first but once he started meeting people and making new friends he really began to enjoy it. By the time he finished his Economics degree he was a completely different person and very fun.

In your first year, try to get involved in school activities as much as possible and immerse yourself in the culture here. Everyone is very friendly and helpful so I'm sure you'll have a good time and get your school work done at the same time!

SFU's student service does provide a decent checklist for stuff you need to do before your first year up at SFU.

Here is the link ----------> http://www.sfu.ca/dean-gradstudies/current/new_student_information/

Regarding accomodations/ place to stay, I thought you will be staying in Rez and have applied already. Not that staying in Rez is essential, but I think think that is would be more convenient/ simple for you to live in Rez instead of looking for a place to stay off campus.

There are Housing Locator such as myidealhome.com and craigslist.

    http://sfu.myidealhome.com/
    http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/

Finally, there is the SFU Rez website...

    http://students.sfu.ca/residences/

Regarding textbooks, I think that should really be the last thing you should worry about. SFU's Bookstore, where you get your course textbooks, get their stuff only three to four weeks before class starts. Also, with any luck, you can also find course textbooks in the Burnaby Public Library system.

Once again, if you got any questions, don't hesistate to ask.

I'm at McGill right now doing my my MA. I'm writing my thesis now. I'll be coming down in the fall to do a PhD at Simon Fraser. I did meet some Simon Fraser people at a conference recently, but didn't meet professor Lucy. From looking at her website she looks good, she has grants, has supervised a lot of students in the past, and publishes a lot.

I know a lot more general stuff about grad student things. One thing is that I'll be staying in Hamilton Hall, I saw you asked a question about that. You should apply soon, spaces must be filling up.
  • edited May 2009
wow.PHD huh..thanks for remind me about the spaces. application is done, but have no answer yet.
McGill is a great school, and PHD in Educational Psy? gosh, i admire that.
and can u tell me something i need to do before i come here?not the list thing but the prepare thing for the MA study.thanks.
