I'm asking a dumb question

edited April 2009 in General
So don't bother pointing that out.

That said, how would you classify a B grade? I'm a first year student at SFU, and gearing towards a degree in Arts & Social Science. I got B's for all my courses this semester and am feeling really down in the dumps. Personally, I think a B is an extremely average grade. What do you think?

In arts classes you should easily be able to get an A or an A-.

So yes, a B in the arts is very bad, usually lower than average too.

Yeah, I thought so. I'm getting sadder by the minute. Any opinions on how I can improve my academic performance? (Other than the obvious "study harder" tip)

Nah dude, don't listen to these dudes ^^. It all really depends on what you are trying to do after your degree, and since you're in first year (what would you need to graduate). Usually if I'm not mistaken, all you need to grad is a 2.0. Hope that helps.

    try a peer-to-peer tutoring program @ SFU.

Thanks. This is my first semester in SFU, and am planning to do a double major in Economics & Political Science. Anyway, I guess I'll just try harder next time.

if he freaks out, the next semester he will try harder
if he thinkings B's are good enough he most likely will do the same

Daamn. B? That's harsh. I'm sorry to hear dude.

It's gonna be a helluva hard work for you next semester to get it back up to at least an A-

    imo dont sweat it
unless u need high grades for scholarship or some further schooling that is dependent upon your gpa, then put in more work and/or improve your studying method/habits

otherwise, enjoy you time in school, grades arent everything in the real world

I thought B's were decent... This thread makes me feel stupid now.

exactly what imelting said.. say if you're planning to go into grad school then yeah.. you'll need to work harder.. other than that.. a B isn't a bad grade at all.. grades are an inevitable component but they aren't all that's there is to university..

OMG. You're getting B's??!! Did I read this correctly???

I'm getting A+++++. If you're wondering how you can be an over achiever like me, first of all--learn how to work your boobs. If you push them together with your arms while you bow your thanks like a Japanese girl, it's very effective. I do this whenever I meet a new prof for each class--I pretend I have some interest question I wanted them to answer, and then I pounce.

If you are a man and lacking in breasts, I suggest some daily KFC. Get some lard in that body of yours and they can usually be perceived as breasts. They might not work as effectively, but we JUST MIGHT be able to bring your average up to an A- rather than a B.

    Best of luck!

I believe the "average" for any course, according to the grading guidelines given by the university, is usually a C+ or B-. Which is why you hear so much about professors sometimes adjusting the curve. The guidelines state that the distribution of grades is such that x% of students get A's, y% get B's, and so forth.

First semester at SFU? I think having all B's in your first semester in is very good. You should expect A's next semester, just fall into a good groove.

My first semester I had 3.74 GPA, then my second I had something like 2.77, the reality is you may not get better, you may not get worse, but you learn different strategies to approach different classes.

Regardless of what other people say, B is 3.0 for GPA is it not? Thats respectable, but for grad schools you probably want to aim higher. Either way you're doing okay compared to the rest of the students overall. I think the average GPA is somewhere around 3.0 or a little less.

    yes B = 3.0
and grad school minimum entry is 3.0 i believe so ya they should aim higher.

my first year GPA was somewhere around 3.8 taking mostly math + cmpt classes (and keep in mind till first year i didn't have any previous knowledge of programming, only networking as i was working on my CCNA and A+ certification)

IMO first few years are the easiest and they should try and get GPA as high as possible, at least in my field classes are cumulative so it gets progressively harder each semester

    That's also true.

Keep in mind you also learn, adapt, and get smarter through the years. Like someone mentioned, you learn new study habits, strategies to approach classes, time management (hopefully), and others that will assist as you progress.

I didn't think starting university was easy. I thought it was a harder and did a little worse. As the years went by you get better and I'm in 4th year now getting the highest grades I ever did at university.
