Unprofessional Prof

So this morning, I walked in by accident during some exam and as I walked out, this prof (Alton Harestad - some biology prof) came right into my face on said:

"F*** off, theres an exam going on here"

I was sort of half-asleep and said: "Did you really say eff-off?*
He yells: "YEAH"

Never have I seen such poor behaviour from a prof. What an a-hole.

What is your worst conduct you've seen from prof?

    Wow, how did you know it was him? But even then, for any faculty or staff to say fuck off is pretty bad.

    lol.. i don't think you would have sufficient grounds to sue him over the use of profanity.. however.. you could go to the department and port him.. see what they have to say about the lack of conduct their faculty member has with students before actually taking it this far..=P

    I went to the CODE office after my exam and asked them what exam was going on when I walked in. It was a Biology exam so I went to the Biology chair's office but only his receptionist was there. Apparently the prof is retiring but I sent an e-mail to the chair anyways.

    A true a-hole he was. I don't think theres anything I can do. I may have found his home address though.

    Haha, retiring Professors tend to do the darnest things. I do not think there is much you can do about this incident.

    I remember one time I went to a prof to ask him for help, and he was asking why I was doing the problem the way I was, and I told him that that was how the TA told me to do it. His response? An angry, raised voiced, "The TAs are fucking idiots."

    Couldn't find that dickhead. I think I've found his home address and phone number though. I'll give it call tonight and see if its him.

    thats funny. i took a course with him but dropped it within days (not b/c of him he was actually really funny and nice), i remember the first day he introduced himself and (these are his words) said he grew up on the east side of vancouver and carried that around with him so he had a tendancy to swear alot.

    i've never had him for a class, but as a bio major, i can say he is probably the most highly praised prof i've ever heard of. i honestly have never met anyone who took his course that didn't love him.

    and i don't think he's retiring. i remember when i was figuring out my classes in the projected course offerings he's supposed to be teaching a class in fall and spring.

    You are complaining about a nonissue. How does saying "fuc*" make him unprofessional? If you want to see unprofessionalism, you should look at the Political Science Department and Elise Chenier of History who forces their belief and ideology onto their students and penalizes those who don't follow suit. NOW THAT'S UNPROFESSIONAL!

    Also, if what collegestudent said about him is true, he seem to be a rather good professor. So what if he is a little foul mouthed, he is doing his job well and his popularity with students testify to this. Finally, you are not even in his class, so why are you complaining about him to the department?

    Now that's just inspirational. Just to clarify, was Downtown East Side already a shi*hole even while he was young? I don't remember where I read this, but wasn't DTES suppose to be a Ok place to live until the late 60s?

    He is unprofessional. He could have just asked politely for him to leave and inform him of an ongoing exam. There's no need for vulgar language and screaming at his face. It doesn't matter where he grew up, it's common courtesy and using appropriate language is part of being professional. I grew up in Surrey (ok, not as bad as east van.), and have seen my fair share of thugs, but you won't ever see me telling a customer to fuck off and shove a pickle up his ass because I'm busy. Justifying your behaviour based on where you grew up is just lame.

    Agree. This prof is so rude. He should be more polite.

    He is rude, no doubt, but calling him unprofessional maybe a little too much. Like collegestudent said, his students love him and that, as well as being "funny and nice", doing his job should have played a great part.

    Look, the prof could have been nicer, but calling him unprofessional is too much because there are a lot more smacktards from departments like Political Science who do much worse.

    I still believe he is being unprofessional. As a person with that much authority, he should atleast have addressed the OP with respect. He is representing the faculty at SFU and that is how he treats students, his or otherwise? Even if he is "loved" and "praised" by many Bio students, he actions should not be encouraged. Go and submit a complaint against him.


    And your example with the PoliSci department was merely unethical, which is different from this situation.

    Just to clarify, there's a huge difference between the Downtown Eastside and East Vancouver.

    Downtown Eastside > East Van (in dangerous terms)

    Yeah, I don't know about you, but having someone say fuck you to you isn't exactly an everyday occurance, especially if you don't even know the person.

    I literally took 3 or 4 steps in and I saw that none of my classmates were there so I turned back and there he was.

    For a guy with his background and credentials, I expected a little more professionalism from him. I don't really care if he did this outside of school cause I could mouth him off too. But in school I wouldn't do such a thing.

    Ah whatever, few beers and a few tokes later I brushed it off.

    Well it's not like I went in there and took a seat. No students saw me anyways. My exam was at 12 and I walked in there around 11:20 thinking that the previous exam ended at 11. Obviously it was a mistake.

    Some of my classmates got mouthed off by him too.
