Living on campus

edited July 2009 in General
So I am contemplating whether or not i should live on campus. At the moment I am about a 20 minute drive to Burnaby Mountain, but we may be moving making it a 30 minute drive. I can save about 7,000 dollars a year by living at home, plus its nicer, better food and what not. The thing that concerns me is... will i be missing out on the true university experience? Will I have a harder time making friends and getting involved because i don't live there? I am still planning on doing intramurals and participating in activities the school has to offer. Im not a big partier so I don't mind missing out on all that. I do think it would be easier to work with others if i lived there and it would be nice to have all the campus stuff right next to me.

I like my family and home, they treat me well, but like i said it seems that there may be many things i am missing out on, but is that really worth $7,000 a year?

What do you think?

    No.

Personally I don't think 30min drive is that long.. provided you're not taking a excessive amount of courses and having to study all the time, I'm confident that you'll be able make time and balance making friends/joining clubs/intramurals/etc with your academics.

If you're mostly considering living on campus, another option is to find a place just near it off the mountain or something (maybe like a 5-10min drive instead).. which will most likely be cheaper than living on campus.

I think it depends on your financial situation, coming from someone who has knows what it takes to make $7000 at a job if your parents can support you then live at rez, if your parents are mid-level income you should just try to come home later and put in that effort

No, you live way too close to SFU to justify living on campus. Besides, you are not going to miss out a lot by living at home instead of on campus. Afterall, SFU Residence doesn't offer much in terms of fun. For example, the best thing that SFU Residence offered so far is the paintball trip, which is not too big of a deal because I go paintballing almost every single week.

I don't think you gonna miss anything called 'true university experience'. You can have much fun as long as you get involved in various volunteering activity that brings people together. Get to know people who live in SFU Rez and try to befriend with them, hang out with them and from that, I think you will get to learn some sort of Rez experience.

i'd say save the 7K.. you could do so much more with that lump of money than paying SFU rent.. and the 20-30 min drive is nothing.. as for the university experience i don't think you have to live on residence to feel it.. lol quite frankly there isn't much to go around.. if you wanna make friends and get involved.. you should check out clubs day and join one..

Um... you're not going missing out on much.
There isn't really much a rez life on campus....

    People make friends fine.
    30 minute drive is NOTHING....

Are you paying for your own tuition? $7000 might not seem like much if you're not paying for it, but it can get you two semesters worth of tuition.

That is worth more than "university life" I think.

SFU does not have a rez life, it does not even have a campus life. It's a commuter school, so stick with commuting.
