Constantly looking at each other in class - is he gay?

So I'm a guy that likes guys and there's this cute guy in one of my classes.

We sit across from each other, and we look at each other so often during class. We both look away once we realize the other has seen us. It's been ongoing for 5 weeks. Earlier in the semester he ran into me and he recognized that I was in his class, so that's a good sign I guess. Ironically, I barely recognized him back then, but that soon changed and I started developing this huge crush on him.

Now if a guy were straight would they really look at another guy that often? I mean I never look at the girl who sits beside him, ever (no offense to girls). Or, could it be that he simply has nowhere else to look because we're sitting across from each other, or the fact that me looking at him makes him look at me? There have been definite occassions where he looked at me first though. Thing is, he doesn't give off signals that tell me he's gay, though many guys don't.

How do I approach this? The semester is almost over! Going up to him and asking if he's gay is not an option by the way!

    Dude! You're gay and you don't have a gay-dar?!?! I'm straight and mine goes off all the time! Luckily, for you, he may be gay (or bisexual?). I don't think heterosexual guys do that. They'd probably give you a menacing look or something.

    Do you even know his name?!?! Who is he and what class is this?! I'm friends with a bunch of people at Out on Campus and if he IS gay, maybe he's hangs out there?! I don't know why I'm super excited right now.

    I'm gay, and I don't have a gaydar. Talk to him and hang out casually first. They'll be signs that can get obvious. I have a friend that likes to hug me and touch me and whatnot and he's not gay.

    yes. I'm straight, and i sometimes look a people with the thought "wow, what a douchebag" but that's just me, others are not so cynical

    Is he from Asia? When I went to China, guys were hand their arms over each other and stuff. I thought they were all gay but my friend said that it's normal in China. Guys are just closer and better buddies there, I guess.

    Nope. He's a sexy European.Norwegian I believe. I don't know much about European culture, but I hung out with him and his girlfriend a couple times.

    Just be direct. Sit next to him and talk for a bit, if he's friendly, just tell him you're a gay guy and you're not sure, but is he, too? I don't know too many guys who would react badly to that, whereas the sly comeon would freak them out far more.

    I do know his name, but I don't wanna say it or what class this is, just in case he's reading! I don't go to out on campus though, because its located in such a central position...it'd be kinda awkward if someone I knew saw me go in. Not that I'm in the closet, but I only tell people if they ask, or if they're important people in my life.

    Thanks for all your comments guys, I guess I should suck it up and talk to him. But i'm not the one who asks people out, they ask me out. I've never asked anyone out in my life!

    Normally I would be one to suggest taking this kind of risk, but with you being gay and not wanting to tell him, there's an extra dimension to this. Perhaps its best to not be too risky. Perhaps talk about sports or something and see where it goes from there. Use extreme caution.

    Oh and this is painfully obvious, but got talk to the people at Out on Campus, they will help you way more than we can

    Hahaha. Just ask him. I remember this happening to me when I was in school, and how talking to the person seemed like such a big deal. It's really not, and you won't know until you do it.
