PSYCH X99?

edited March 2009 in General
Out curiosity, what exactly is this?

It says its a B-Sci/Writing...curious as to whether I can just take it as a class to fulfill my B-Sci req?

Can anyone take it? Or is it restricted to specific people? Are the credits applicable towards your BA?--Only reason I ask this is because I know practicums credits aren't applicable towards the BA.

Lastly, what is it X99 and not a regular 100-level course?

Wondering if I should take this with Natasha Ghosh @ Surrey OR with Owen Thomas @ Vancouver (This guy seems to be easier/better according to RMP) this summer over waiting for Kin 140 w/ Walsh in the Fall..

Any thoughts?

JUST SAY NO! This is a piece of shit class. Super easy if you took PSYC 100 and 102 -- it's pretty much just an overview of main concepts in psychology.

Anyone is allowed to take it. I took it last semester with Gordon Rose (douchebag) and it is extremely writing intensive. Expect:
    - 2-page summaries due by email every Sunday
    - parts of your essay (abstract, thesis, rough draft, etc. -- they do it in parts) due every 2 weeks
    - a debate

However, this is based on Gordon Rose's class.

Its applicable to any degree that will accept it, its just a regular credit course. It'll fulfill your b-sci, one writing, and apply to a BA.

Also, if I were you, I would not take this course if you're looking for something easy or minimal effort, people do notoriously bad in this course.

I did fine in the class, but I would not reccomend it to anyone in first year before they have taken english, or anyone who hasn't taken some bio related courses.

I'm not first year, I'm a third year and one my strengths are writing, so I think I have a leg up.

I'm just curious as to whether I want to take this now vs. taking Kin 140 in Fall

According to the syllabus posted online from the SFU website its:

    Midterm: 20%
    Final: 20%
    Debate: 5%
    Tutorial assignments & attendance: 15%
    Term paper (several components): 40%

That was the same breakdown for FALL 08 semester. Honestly, if you do like writing and find psychology interesting, take the course. It does require a lot of writing as I mentioned and it is time consuming. Expect to learn about main concepts in psychology (reinforcement, punishment, perception, Zimbardo's Prison Experiment, subliminal persuasion, etc.)

I still have the book that contains all the debate topics (if they use that next semester) if you want it. Cover is ripped but I can sell it to you for super cheap.

I think I'll just go with Kin 140 with Walsh and get the easy A learning something at least interesting.

    Thanks for the tip though

most pointless class ever, doesn't cover anything psych 101 would( which is the REAL psych course) just take psych 101 if you're looking to take a psych course
