Maximum amount of courses I can take this summer?

edited March 2009 in General
Hey Im sure this is a dumb question but I just wanted some clarification.
On my SFU sis it says
Max total Units - 18
Max No GPA Units - 12
Max Audit Units - 18
Max Wait List Units - 6

So essentially what is the difference between total units and No GPA Units?
Are GPA just classes that are given grades?

The title should say amount I was in a rush my bad.

    Sure thing.
    Max total Units - 18
The normal everyday course. You can only take 18 credits of them. This usually mean 4 upper level or 5 lower level.
Max No GPA Units - 12
Like imelting said, it is probably course that is graded upon pass/fail basis. Ex: HUM 495: Humanities Graduating Seminar
    Max Audit Units - 18
Courses where you take it just for the knowledge but not the work that comes with it. Hardly anyone does this.
Max Wait List Units - 6
How many credits can you waitlist. Since most upper level courses are 4 credit courses, you essentially can only wait list for one upper level or two lower level.

Pretty much. Just go and register.

I don't think the majority of upper level courses are four credits...I think the four credit thing is more related to summer semester offerings, than upper division, although you can find them year round...

Isn't it less than 10%? If that?

There is no denying that some upper level courses are not four credits, however a lot of upper level courses in departments that I came across (ex: Women Studies, History, Humanities, Political Science) are indeed four credit courses.

You are in Criminology right? I just looked at the Criminology website and I am surprised that hardly any upper level courses are four credits. :omg:

Ok, it is the 4 credit thing depends on department to department. I am pretty you know this by now, but just in case...

Whenever you see a course name and number, you always see the Department Name, then the course number, finally a number. Ex: HIST-338- 4. That "4" indicates the course's credit.

I am actually looking at year round as an average. But then again, almost all upper level courses in my programs (History and Humanities) are 4 credit courses.

BTW, if this is true, then I wouldn't be looking at another four month summer vacation this year.

That makes sense 'cause less people tend to take courses in the summer or people take less courses or a combination of both. That extra one credit squeezed out extra cash for SFU

Jeeze, my registration date isn't for another 10 days and my courses are going fast ='(

I am not sure if I understand both you and Randomuser correctly. Are you saying that courses that are offered during the summer are one credit more than their fall and spring counterpart? I do not think the amount of credit each course changes.

I don't know about other departments, but the amount of credit a course has usually correlates to the amount of class time that course has in a week. For example, a three credit courses usually has two hours of lecture + one tutorial (almost all lower level History)or three hours of lecture (ex: Archaeology) and four credit courses would usually mean that it is a three hours of lecture + one tutorial (upper level History) or four hours of seminar (ex: Humanities).

Therefore, if a three credit course done become a four credit course, then the professor better have four hours of stuff, or I want a refund.

Welcome to SFU. At least there are still 63 seats in HUM-130, if you are planning to take that.

No buddy, I'm saying that they offer more courses that have 4 credits than 3 credit courses. I'm not saying that they tack one an extra credit for 3 credit courses in the summer.
