I'm sorry you all think this way about me but I am honest about my work and do believe I can bring a change to this school. All of you have never yet even seen what I can do but have already stereotyped me as a "douche". Why not take a chance and vote for me? Maybe I will be able to do what all my predecessors could not. Maybe I will be able to change this school for the better. Why not take that risk and see how far I can bring this school?

Some of you believe that my goals do not appeal to the masses but think of it this way. Each goal by itself does not appeal to a mass but together, they cover the masses itself. As for me being "not academically adequate", that is a poor way to judge a person. So, getting "poor grades" automatically labels a person as being a douche?

If I can increase the amount of money the SFSS holds, we can improve the conditions of the school with that money and hold many more fun events for all the students. I have many schemes to make that money but it would be unfit to announce these schemes when I have not even been voted into power yet. If I am elected, I would be happy to share these schemes with you all.

Don't vote for Mona. Her leadership skills are poor and unacceptable. I admit she does have some skill but she does not have enough experience yet and her being elected will only drive the SFSS into the ground. Vote for me and I will make living and learning at SFU a better experience.

Take that very first step on a path of change by voting for me and together, we can make SFU a more enjoyable place for everyone!
Why would someone take a risk if they can bank on a person that will get the job done? If you were smart, you wouldn't have labelled yourself a risk. My vote goes to Mona. At least she's coherent and has idealistic goals that can be achieved or show progress within a year's time.

I think you should take back your statement about Mona's leadership skills. She's organized events like 'Spread the Net' Fundraiser which was a success. What have YOU done? All talk no action. Take your platform down son. You're embarrassing.

lol that debate was retarded, Nigel was the only one who could formulate proper sentences
Even Andy did better than Mona...her groupies kinda ruined it for Andy lol

I think Nigel is too focused on sustainability rather than students. I haven't spoken/ heard about his campaign but it seems as though he doesn't place much emphasis on students.

Andy performed better than Mona? I beg to differ. He couldn't even articulate his thoughts properly. And what was up with the personal attacks on another candidate. Was that really necessary? Trying to laundry someone else's downfall (or lack thereof since it was a false accusation) when you fail to prove yourself capable to satisfy the position is so low.

I truly don't get all the Andy Shen hate, and I never have. He's just sort of an awkward, quiet guy with some social problems and very low self-esteem. It truly saddens me, how totally people will band together to shit all over him. Some of it he brings on himself, but a large portion just comes from the mob mentality; here is someone we can all hate together!

I will not vote for him, but I also won't go out of my way to try to make him feel like garbage.

Agreed. He did the best in the debate IMO, but most of his vision seems to be towards sustainability. A lot of his answers regarding other issues defaulted to a "I can't answer this now, but I'll see what I can do about it later if I'm elected" kinda thing. I know he wasn't the only one to do that, but meh.

Interesting how hes involved in the Yacht Club, an embodiment of excess, but proclaims his views about sustainability.

Sorry about interrupting this bash fest, but I got a reminder regarding the SFSS election of 2009. You probably received the email regarding the election next week from Chief Electoral Officer Panther Kuol, but just in case...

The Simon Fraser Student Society General Election and Referenda will be held NEXT WEEK, from Tuesday March 17 to Thursday March 19. Voting will be done online using SFU web survey. On the first day of the election, you will receive an email with 6 links, each linked to the President, Member Services Officer, Treasurer, Internal Relations Officer, External Relations Officer, University Relations Officer, At-Large representatives (2) as well as all the referendum questions. Also, you are eligible to vote for Faculty Representative if you are taking honors, major, minor or at least one course in a certain faculty.

The result will be announced at midnight of March 19, 2009 and uploaded onto the front page of the independent Electoral Commission website at noon on Friday March 20th, 2009.

    Thankyou.

Putting the bashing and witch-hunting aside, it is very important for us to put words into actions by actually voting in this election.

I think it is completely shameful the way Andy Shen is being treated on this forum. Whether or not you agree with his platform, there is no reason for the hateful personal attacks he is receiving. Regardless of what you think about him, nobody deserves such treatment.

I would just like to set the record straight on this account. I am an amateur sailor, and lead an international level sailing team. We are racing in the world championships next month in Annapolis, Maryland. I am a member of a yacht club so that I have a place to store my boat, and so that I can receive the support that I need in order to run a high-level racing campaign. I think it is interesting how sailing might be portrayed as excess, considering it is one of the oldest and most sustainable forms of transportation. I take leadership roles in communities I am a part of, and as a board member I have created a new, fun social program, and am working towards reducing the carbon footprint of the Yacht Club. I have been involved is sailing as an athlete, as a coach, and as the head of one of the largest non-profit sailing schools in Western Canada. I love sailing, and will continue to promote it as a great form of recreation and travel that one can do ones whole life.

If you are interested in giving sailing a try, so that you can see how much fun it is, and how little impact it has on the environment, I would be happy to recommend some great programs where you can take lessons!

i don't hate him but his platform (the original post), whether it be a troll or not, is just plain laughable.

He should have at least outlined how he plans to achieve each of his promises because realistically from our pov they're obviously empty promises that are impossible to achieve. That would've been a good move rather than begging to give him a chance by voting for him, and just the thought of that annoys the fuck out of me.

I dont really care for sustainablity, i care for parties which are currently non-existant at SFU.
If you can pull off a party in the convo mall, you will be a legend at SFU

I don't care about sustainability. (But it is definitely a bonus if you can acomplish this!) I care about more pressing issues that normal students are concerned about. For example, can someone PLEASE talk about SFU's deteriorating course registration problem? A few of our members had their graduations delayed by about a semester because they couldn't get into any course that they wanted this summer...

BTW, instead of discussing the SFSS election in this thread, should we move this discussion to a newer, less spammed thread?

    Oh no you didn't.

I'm talking about yachts, not wind sailing, don't miscontrue my words.

So you're only a member so you have a place to store your boat, but then you say you're trying to reduce the carbon footpring of the people and their giant yachts. I guess the ends justify the means. Uh huh.

Okay, I'll entertain the thought though, how are you doing this?

I am setting up a waste vegetable oil system for their diesel generator on Gambier Island. It will use the waste from the club restaurant instead of diesel to produce electricity. It will also be a model for how those members of the club who have diesel powered yachts can reduce their carbon footprints, since the technology is the same whether it applied to a boat or generator. My car also runs on waste vegetable oil, it is a really neat system.

What I am most proud of in my tenure on the board are the social events I have set up for the younger members of the club. We had a great New Years party, hockey night, and a group sailing cruise. Lazyguy, I've got your back. I have promised to host a week of welcome in September and January with beer, bands, and all-round merriment. See my platform, and my profile in the Peak on Monday.
