Favorite Restaurants / Lounges

edited March 2009 in General
Does anyone have any places they really like?

One I like is Don Francescos on Burrard street downtown. It's Italian food, and I really like the variety. Most pastas involve tomato sauces too much and there is such a large variety at this place. I like the location and decor as well.

I'm running out of new places to go, and am wondering other peoples experiences. I've been to every chain restaurant there is, so omit places like earls or cactus club.

What kind of atmosphere are you looking for?

I really like Fogg 'n Sudds for their awesome appies, comfort food, and Fishbowl Fridays. The place is super chill, totally not fancy or anything like that. I also like Cafe Crepe for cheap drinks and it's just another chill place to go. And True Confections!!! 8" high cakes... c'mon now.

For more upscale-ish places, I'm sorry, but I love Joey's. Capone's in Yaletown is also great. They usually have a jazz player there which adds a nice touch to the atmosphere.

I like the atmospheres in the Joey's downtown, but I don't really find the menu all that exciting.

    I'll check out Capones though.

Maxine's Hideaway in the West End is great too. Food's not super (apparently their pizzas are good) but you get an awesome show from their burlesque troupe, the Candy Girl Cabaret.

avoid getting any food at Cafe Crepe, their NOT food safe certified (regardless of the certificates, the owner bribed the inspectors)
probably why everyone i know who worked there quit lol

Mmm.. Memphis Blues' Elvis Platter. Nothing like a big pile of slow-cooked meat.

Memphis Blues is fantastic. I feel like I'm going to have a heart-attack after I eat there, but DAMN is it worth it.

My favorite restaurant in Vancouver is Sandbar on Granville Island. Best damn seafood around, great service...and the best beer I've ever tasted (Granville Island Honey Lager). Definitely go there in the summer, great place to have dinner then walk around the island.

Closer to campus there is a Pasta place called Antone's on Hastings right by SFU...anyone been there? For 10 bucks you get a huge portion of really good pasta. I usually get full off half of the meal then pack up the rest and take it home for later on. But if you finish the whole thing you get a pen, which I achieved once last summer :D Couldn't breathe after but it was worth it lol

I've heard so many good things about Memphis Blues, especially their pulled pork? I totally need to go sometime.

ive heard good things about that beer, cant I get it anywhere here?

and i accept the pasta challenge, i once ate a 20oz steak at the keg, with sides and appetizers!!

Anton's prices are around the $15+ mark now, but they'll give you about 3 servings worth of pasta.

Having spent pretty much every weekday for lunch around down/Yaletown for a co-op over the two previous semesters, places that stood out for me were:

    Yaletown Brewery
Subeez (if only for the atmosphere, but the food isn't bad)
    Urban Thai
    Goldfish
A Japanese place on Cambie and something. Near the one at the Roundhouse.

our pub at school serves Granville Island Honey Lager on tap. Had a pint of it last week :)

The Reef on Main St. It's a caribbean-style restaurant, but my friends and i usually go there just to get pitchers of drinks and appies. they play cool music too but sometimes it can be too loud to be able to hear each other.

or there's Foundation also on Main St, just before broadway. it's vegetarian, but their nachos are AWESOME! they're topped with a crap-load of stuff (especially if you get the special nachos). a regular plate is about $8 and you can easily share between 3 people. the large plate is only like $10 but it was so freaking massive, we could barely finish it! line-ups get super long around 8pm and they don't take reservations.

Kino Cafe, on Cambie St. next to Park Theatre. It's Flamenco Tapas bar with really good sangria. they have flamenco dancers who perform on Friday nights and every other night or something, which is really cool. gets really busy in there when the dancers are there though.

Before the change in management, my favorite restaurant was the Shota Japanese Cuisine restaurant on Westminister Highway and No.1 Road. Their Bentō lunch and late night mix and match special used to be so good. After the change in management, they got rid of the late night special and the quality of their food somewhat deterorated. :(

There was also a Schiuan/ Shanghai place right across the street from IHOP in Richmond at Park Road. I forgot the name, but their food is nice.

Gotham has kind of gone downhill in the last year or two, but I really liked that restaurant. Also, The Italian Kitchen is great if you're into pastas and Westcoast dishes.

what restaurant used to be run by that iron chef guy here?
and has anyone here ever ate at a gordon ramsey restaurant?
  • edited March 2009
@lazyguy you can get granville island honey lager anywhere really but it doesn't taste anywhere near as good as on granville island...don't ask me why i guess it's just more "fresh"

and there is a hell's kitchen in Van but it's more of a lounge/bar than anything else...not even a good one at that

going to a real gordon ramsey hell's kitchen would be pretty crazy...they have one in LA

Feenie? He used to run Lumiere which reopened not too long ago. He now works at Cactus Club apparently. And I don't think that Gordon Ramsay has any restaurants around here.
  • edited March 2009
I think the hells kitchen here has no affiliation with gordon ramsey...

and lumiere is insanely fucking expensive, i feel uncomfortable just being in there

So from what I gather, I should try memphis blues and gotham, I've never been to these places yet

Unfortunately, I do not think there are any restaurants run by Gordon Ramsay anywhere near here.

Personally, I am much more interested in visiting former Kitchen Nightmare restaurants. Being a fan of Indian food, I am interested in visiting Purnima (US Series, Season 1, Episode 2) and Curry Lounge (UK Series, Season 5, Episode 7).

Just wondering, is that Hell's Kitchen in LA also the same Hell's Kitchen that they shoot the Hell's Kitchen show in.

If people are going to Chef Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen for the food, I would suggest that people go after most of the bad cooks are eliminated. You probably don't want to go when there are still cooks who pour water into risotto or forgetting to turn the oven on. Service is going to take forever and you may not even get your entree...

But I agree, watching Chef Ramsay running his kitchen would be the experience of a life time. My favorite quotes being, "Where is THE LAMB SAUCE???" and the "non-stick" one.

I second Foundation. I'm not a vegetarian or anything but a couple of their pastas are pretty good for the price. (Peanut one, and this pesto one..) Forgot their names. There's also the Eatery near UBC on W Broadway. It's japanese with a western fusion... really laid back environment. Both are chill places.

Japanese Food: Shiro on Cambie and 16th? The atmosphere is pretty chill and the food is great too but it can be pretty expensive. It's a small place too so parking is limited and waiting for a table is always required. The sushi is good though.

Italian: I recommend Anton's. Large Servings, Pastas not bad and the atmosphere is relaxing.
