I hope you're not being serious...in the scientific academic community there is pretty much a consensus there is global warming, it is just to the extent of what part are natural cyclical weather patterns and which are man-made.
You do realize that many low lying areas such as Richmond will get flooded just as badly, if not worse, than UBC in the event that the sea level rises any further.

Well, there are still heated debates.
If SFU would host a global warming debate, I will so attend.

YOU HAVE A BOAT?
I wouldn't agree, go check the literature on the side that contends it doesn't exist and check who backed those studies and the methodological faults. What exactly are the heated debates? Or were you making a pun?
I'm not claiming weather trends change, but best case scenario, global warming doesn't exist, pollution still isn't good.
Yes, I notice most of the literatures that repudiate global warming were written by, or written with the funding of, companies or organizations or industries that causes global warming. However, there were still scholars out there that, while not exactly repudiating global warming, are still sitting on the fence in this issue.
Also, there are quite a bit of debating going on as to the cause of Global Warming, with some arguing that it is a natural phenomenon while other argues that human played a great role in exacerbating this problem. I vaguely remember a scene in Al Gore's movie Inconvenient Truth where he showed that since early 20th century, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere has skyrocketed compare to previous centuries. I don't know about you, but a spike in carbon just doesn't happen overnight.

You're a history major right? You ever hear of the 'Industrial Revolution'?
You're a history major right? You ever hear of the 'Industrial Revolution'?
The industrial revolution is what really started this whole problem, now the rampant use of coal and fossil fuel is continuing to make the problem worse.
What's important right now is NOT diagnosing what's causing Global Warming, but what we can do to halt and possibly repair the damage, which is easier said than done...
Going back to the original title of the thread, global warming will...
cause a humanitarian crisis sooner or later of nothing is done to halt the problem.
ill just wanna say that if anyone is stating anything related to global warming that they got from watching "the inconvenient truth" is a fucking moron
MOST of the hippies that argue human induced global warming are bs ( dont believe me? check their sources, they cite themselves or other hippies, not actual scientific research ) <- i pointed this out while taking REM100 for all the bs papers we had to read. funny that even the prof didnt catch that "small" detail... but then i guess u can ignore those details when ur job description involves scaring people 1/2 to death of a threat that cant be avoided
the IPCC and any result it comes to is also questionable, again read up on what some of the scientists who are part of it have to say about its validity (its like PGP in comp sci :P pretty good but not enough)
and plz put the issue to rest folks, CO2 does not drive temperature, CO2 is a result of higher temperatures. if u look @ the industrial revolution, and heck the whole CO2 to Temp chart u see temp increase way b4 we even started pumping out significant levels of CO2
oh and keep in mind most climate models ignore water vapor as a GHG in their estimates thus are as useful as an empty TP roll =p
I fully agree climate change occurring because the climate has always changed and will always change... the earth has had periods warmer and colder then we have had today, its constantly changing because it is an open system (don't forget solar activity) and for good measure :p
Couldn't care less about global warming: by the time it takes full effect I'll either be dead or dying.
Well actually, global warming has already taken effects in certain parts of the world.
For example, we are seeing mosquito lines going up to higher altitudes as temperature gets warmer. Before, the cooler climate of high altitude areas tends to keep mosquito at bay.
Also, low lying islands in the Pacific will soon be swallowed by the sea. Even now, island inhabitants are struggling to survive as their traditional fishing grounds are dying and their fresh water supply dwindling. Anyone want to guess where these excess sea water came from?
I don't remember where I read this, but someone had said that Venice, sooner or later, will be at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea. For all you soccer/ football fans, remember back in 2006 when Italy won the World Cup and people were celebrating in a square in Venice, that square is now flooded.
It is only a matter of time before we are next.

I WAS WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SAY THAT.
UBC and Richmon drowning? There goes all the Asians...
Richmond should be underwater a long time ago. The only thing that is keeping Richmond from getting flooded are the dikes surrounding the city...

Like I said, I couldn't care less about future generations or what they'll have to deal with; preceding generations didn't care about ours, so why should we be concerned about posterity?

thats not true, I've been to venice and to that square, what u need to know is in winter sea level rises thus that square is under water every winter...then in summer water drops and that square is good to go for the record its st. mark's square and if u want proof its not underwater here u go straight from my FB http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1513267&l=b7477&id=507869645
EDIT: mind u venice is pretty dead anyways, its mostly a tourist attraction because the cost of living there is through the roof thus not a lot of people actually live there anymore (other then those who make an income from the tourism)

if it is true that global warming speeds exponentially or at least faster than was expected, then i'd have something to worry about. If not, i will have kids to worry about. and grand kids.
...and if global warming doesn't exist, then we are still polluting the planet and the air, and our kids and grandkids will be in a world of garbage and impurity
^ well at least we're doing something good aren't we? be it political or not, i don't really care. relying on green energy is definitely better than relying on oil. green is good. at least we're taking care of mama earth.

just because something "seems" green to us now does not mean it cant have negative effects in the future
well as of now i don't see how harvesting energy from wind or sea can be harmful or more harmful than coal and oil. except probably the price? but that could be because our technology is still in its infancy.
if we know there's an alternative, we can always stop polluting the air since that's we've practically been doing until the industrial revolution.

You are kidding if you think it will drown UBC before it drowns the rest of the Fraser Valley (including Richmond).
