Coop Question

I know there are several coop students here but I'm wondering how long it took for the employer to contact you for an interview from the day you submitted your application?

I'm going on a co-op term this summer, and there are very few job postings. From some of the people that I've talked to, this isn't the case (especially during summer) before the economy went down the shitter. I saw tons of postings from EA and they've all been pulled. They had a massive layout recently but I'm hoping that has nothing to do with it.

    Jobs are released over the semester so hopefully you'll see a lot more...what faculty are you in?

    I only had three interviews. Two of them I heard the week after, and one took half a month. After that, it took about two weeks to hear back so, for the job I have now, I applied in the middle of October and accepted in the middle of November.

    I'm applying to RIM. They've got plenty of openings. Plus, I really want to be able to make crude jokes about my summer employment.
    The only downside is that they're mostly based in Ontario.

    I remember within a week time frame once, I submitted an application, and my coop coordinator called me and told me they wanted an interview within the next couple days. It went really quickly. Others take forever to make any decisions. It depends.

    I'm in Computing Science. I have applied to 5 so far, but it's probably extremely competitive. 3 to HSBC, one at a government agency in Victoria, and another one at some astrophysics research lab.

    What's your major Pixie? I have a friend in CS that's in the similar situation as you.

    My friend was in CS... he's graduated and did the DDP and he hasn't found a job yet. Very surprising because he's so smart...

    Yeah this is common now among newly grads apparently. Some are even coming back to get a coop job so they can at least make some money.

    I don't get it. Are you hating on IVT just for the sake of hating on IVT? If so, don't be a dick.

    If you're calling him a lazy dumbass for not applying to enough positions, then you're also calling Agentbob a lazy dumbass since they've both applied to about the same number of jobs.

    If you're saying that they should have work experience before applying to co-op jobs, then you're missing the point. Co-op is a chance for students to get some industry experience before they graduate.

    dude, ignore him. He's the kid who dropped out of CS to go into SIAT. He calls everyone a dumbass and is quite full of himself.

    Are you applying through their SFU ambassador or through symplicity?

    I don't really want to relocate, but if I do, Victoria will be the further-est that I'd go.

    My friend's friend who is also in DDP had to take a job in Toronto due to the lack of work here in Vancouver =T

    Really? Is that "the" DDP program, as in: the one where everyone goes to China for a few years? I thought they just started it in 2006.

    They have their own online application process. I think I saw a few postings located in Washington, but I'm not sure if they hire across the border.

    Took a week after my application submission to contact me.
    Usually contact you a week after submission due date.

    I got 4 interviews... but only went to the first one because I accepted the job. Had to cancel the other ones, lol.

    I am in Comp Sci co-op too. I applied to 9 jobs so far.

    Yeah, China for 2 years, then back at SFU for 2 years.

    He's really smart so he finished early i think he left china in less than 2 years...

    Where did you apply? I noticed two positions from HSBC that's been pulled. Those are also the two that I applied for, so I'm assuming they found the person they're looking for.

    There are less than 20 job postings, and half of them are from hong kong.

    About 80% of people applying for their first Co-Op get placed in the Lightning Round. I applied to many for last fall, and only got interviews and offers once the lightning round began (at which case they came fast and furious).

    It's not time to panic yet...

    When does Lightning Round begin?
    When do co-op coordinators send applications to employees? Do they wait till the dead line and then send all of applications or do they send them as they come?

    usually i got contacted up to a week after submission. i had a few interviews, but, its funny though...i ended up with a CS job (which is where im cooping at right now) even though im in bio. since it was my first coop, my advisor just suggested accepting whatever came my way, and here i am, in something not in my field, lol
