You know what sucks a lot about SFU? We don't have a single concert venue. While UBC over there has two fucking venues that attract massive shows. I can't see why we can't set up gigs and shows in the gym? I'm sure that would generate some much needed revenue and keep people attracted to the campus socially.
Which one? The track field? I remember seeing another field beside it surrounded by trees, but I'm not sure if that hasn't been bulldozed over yet for more apartments.

Maybe because it's on a mountain? The parking here are atrocious. We were suppose to get an Olympic venue but they switched it out.

Parking shouldn't matter too much. Downtown Vancouver's filled with popular venues like the Commodore, but people don't have any problems with getting there. Same goes with places like Croatian Cultural Centre. A lot of people just transit to shows since parking gets marked up so much.

Oh good point.
Come to think of it, a concert here would be pretty bad ass. It's isolated too, so it creates a nice vibe. There's a campus battle thing going on, maybe we can get Death Cab for Cutie to come up here.

Yeah, a friend and I had an argument about that. Much as I'd love to get them up here. SFU isn't gonna get them. We agreed that it's gonna go to a really artsy school, like McGill or UVIC. Not being racist or anything here, but SFU is filled with a lot of asian people who don't have a single clue who Death Cab is.
Now one thing that I think could be plausible and really hope the SFSS would fight for it, would be to get the Warped Tour here. Last year UBC couldn't host them so they skipped out and added Saskatchewan to their tour list. But they're coming back to Vancouver this year... and without a venue yet. I think SFU could host the tour. I think combing the fields by the gym, we should have enough ground to host it, hell, we can even open up the gym and add a stage in there. I think if we somehow get that, then it would open up and let everyone know that SFU's a viable venue.
oo i actually meant the convo mall but same thing convo mall would mean a huge dance floor lol
seriously though, sfss should do this kinda shit instead of wasting money on other crap that no one cares about
There was a dance in convo mall in Spring '07. They called it Black Ice...and it was way too cold to be fun in my opinion. Pretty sure the AQ pond was frozen. I forget who organized it.
I remember Black Ice, it was organized by an SFU Business Student named Andrew Cho
It was an awesome idea but the fact that they did it in the winter kinda ruined the whole point...even with the heaters it was really cold. I think if it was a summer event it woulda been awesome, and I bet a lot of non-sfu people would even come to something like that. When I was grade 11 we had an outdoor dance at the end of the year with these nice video screens and good lighting and it was honestly one of the best times I've ever had partying ...while the sun went down in the background.
There was an awesome free techno party by the bus loop, under the radio station back in the fall - there are lots of spots on campus amenable to parties/concerts.

well outdoor summer events happen all the time in south america/europe (i can only comment on where i've been) most clubs have an indoor location for winter and an outdoor venue for summer. its an awesome idea. the only downside is noise... for example in my hometown in europe they put all the clubs at the core of the city, my house is somehting like 7+km away and i can still hear the music if i go outside at night so i cant imagine what its like for people living closer.
i wonder tho if someone threw a random party in the AQ how quick security would be there to break it up :p
