Statistics with Timothy Swartz

Anyone taken Statistics 101 Distnace Ed with Tim? Or any Distance Ed classes with him?
I saw the ratings on rate my proff, but they're all stats 270 and in class.

    I took DE stat last summer. Don't worry about who the prof is (I think i had tim, but don't remember for certain).

    It's totally 100% self-directed learning.
    The book (with the ipod ad cover) is horrible at explaining things, first half is just a repeat of high school maths, second half is new & brainfart material.
    The DE software is atrocious.
    The TMs are almost as useless as the book.
    You never, ever, ever have any contact with the prof, ever.

    DE does cover less material than the lecture offering, so if you already know the material, it's a breeze and easy A.
    If you don't already know the material, then it's probably better to stick with lecture.

    I do prefer british spelling over US spelling, but math vs. maths is such an inconsequential difference that i use both

    i'll pick one if you can come up with a sound argument in support of one over the other. personally i'm leaning toward the one with 's' if it's to be abbreviated at all :P

    Regardless of what class it is, it is still the same prof.

    For example, Prof. Brian Hayden of the Archaeology Department teaches all sorts of archaeology course ranging from 100 to 400 level courses. All the ratings on RYP comes back in frownly faces. Conclusion: He is a prick regardless of what he teaches.

    Yet my prof for my ARCH 200 class, Erle Nelson has nothing but bad ratings yet he is the most awesome professor I have ever had.

    You need to learn to read between the lines of what is said on RMP because nothing on there can be taken literally. The only people that rate professors are the people who do horrible and can't man up to accept that it is their own fault they did bad.

    asking your friends for their opinions to corroborate RateMyProf's rating is a good idea too :)

    ^JayDub, let's just say that after CNS 210 , I came to really trust RMP because, had I read the comments and ratings, I would not have taken CNS 210 but instead HUM 130 or vacation.

    On a side note: Haha, Canadian Studies in SFU is DEAD! HAHHAAHAHHHAH! ROT IN HELL, you poor excuse of an academic discipline! I hope I get invited to Canadian Studies' wake and funeral.

    Ok, I guess course evaluation does work. If you are going to laugh at me for missing out on your new favorite professor, at least I fulfilled my dream of learning about Ancient Egypt by taking ARCH 252.
