Your experiences at college (for college transferers)

edited February 2009 in General
So what were your experiences of college (Langara? Kwantlen? VCC?) and your transferring to SFU? Do you regret it? or do you think it's the best decision of your life? lol

I transfered from Langara to SFU, I didn't have a choice because I wanted a BA.

I liked college more because most classes are seminars.

I only went to college because I didn't want to have to trek up to BBY mountain, and the tuition was cheaper.

I regreted it at first because you get fucked over for registration, but otherwise I'm over it now because I register before most people anyway.

yeah i regreted it for the longest time, 'cause when iwas in college, it was sort of like when you're in highschool you really want to get out, and when you do get out, you realize how good it was ahha. Yeah, now i'm screwed over totally cuz i have to drive from richmond all the way to sfu nowadays. lol

Surrey classes are mostly seminars, especially upper division courses.

My brother goes to college and I hate his class schedules. I personally like university, but I had always preferred lecture halls.

eheh i hate being cramped into the tiny seats w/ the fold up desks though (for those who have classes in those lecture halls).

guess i shouldn't have rushed my way through college like I did lol.

Langara could be described as High School Plus. It wasn't a bad experience, but I spent a year in university prior to moving and attending Langara, so it was a bit jarring. The smaller class sizes are nice though, which allows more opportunities for one-on-one instructor help when needed. The closeness to my home and substantially cheaper tuition wasn't bad either.

I was planning to get a BSc since I finished high school and would prefer to stay in the Lower Mainland. Thus, finishing up a program at SFU was essentially my only option, since I couldn't get into UBC.

So, if I have enough with SFU's piece of shi* course registration and selection issues, it is probably a good idea if I apply to become visiting student to these fine colleges, take some courses there, and transfer it back to SFU? Where do I get the paper work?
  • edited January 2009
Well at most colleges you're limited to 1XX - 2XX courses, and you can only take X amount of credits outside of SFU anyway. And if you are concurrently enrolled at SFU you need departmental permission.

Most universities have agreements with local colleges that allow for direct transfer of courses. So say first year Chem at the college of your choice would be considered equivalent to taking first year Chem at SFU. The registrar's office at a college or at SFU should be able to provide you with information on what will transfer as what. Its a good idea to make sure something will transfer before you take it.

u need to complete a letter of permission in order to take some courses outside sfu and transfer the credits back. i gonna take some courses in douggie coz i realize that sfu actually doesnt have much choice on the course selection...i dont wanna pay more to sfu for a 2nd year course which is not essential for my graduation, even it is my major. i rather take some upper level courses outside sfu and transfer the credits back (and less tuition fee too!)

course credits do not transfer back to SFU once you've reached sixty credits.

Really? Then what about those that got RTW in their third or fourth year? Don't the courses they took at where-ever-the-hell they went transfer back?

He meant you can transfer any 60 credits from outside institutions, regardless you are in 3rd or 4th year.

Once you pass that, then you're SOL. Almost every institutions out there cap the transfer credit limit at 60, that's to prevent scummers from transferring 110 credits and take one semester to graduate.

Perfect, I have never taken anything outside SFU before. Ok, I guess I will talk to my academic advisors next week.

Which college do you guys recommend? There is Kwantlen Richmond, which is right in Richmond. Then there is Langara, where some of my high school classmates now rot. There is also UBC, I can apply as a visiting student and mock my RTWed-out-of-UBC cousin.

Bad idea, they'll try to make you stay at SFU, that's their job.

Everything you need is at BC Transfer Guide.

Yeah, they will definitely discourage it. You need to have a really good reason, plus if the course is offered at SFU, it will be difficult.

If you do get to take college courses, I say Kwantlen... I heard they have a new resources library. Has anyone heard about it / been to?
