UBC Engineering prank didn't work out

edited February 2009 in General
I found this kinda amusing, apparently they do this every year but this time they dropped the car into the river lol
VANCOUVER - Five UBC Engineering students have been released on appearance notices after their arrest for mischief over $5000 early this morning.

Vancouver Police officers found the students attempting to lower part of a Volkswagen over the edge of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge at around 4 a.m., according to a police news release.

At some point, the rope or cabling they were using failed and the vehicle plunged into the Burrard Inlet.

No one was injured in the incident.

The University's Engineering department says this is the first time students have faced charges in connection to a prank.

Engineering students have been hanging the hollowed-out shells of Volkswagen Beetles from Vancouver bridges since about 1981 to mark the start of engineering week at the university.

Eight years ago, students suspended a Volkswagen off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

UBC Enginners love pulling stunts and pranks like this. I am glad they got busted this time. Hopefully, they will learn to apply their enginnering skills to more appropiate use.

Come to think about it, do SFU have any similiar traditions?

    fail.

I love this tradition, and hope they continue it without hesitation.

If I recall, didn't UBC Enginners pulled the EXACT SAME STUNT last year?

Yeah, but exact same stunt AND exact same location AND exact same time period? They are just begging to get arrested.

I think they just hate volkswagens.

That's made out of foam in case anyone wants to know. I heard it on the radio today when someone called in and spilled the beans.

SFU needs to do this. Come on, we need some kind of cool subculture around here. Let's make a huge rubber ducky and dump it on the reflective pond.

Personally, I would much rather we be responsibile citizens and "Thinking of the World" by having a tradition of sabotaging UBC's Enginnering Pranks. I was think that, if UBC Engineering attempt something similiar next year, we may post sentries on both ends of the Lions Gate Bridge and call the cops when they show up. Still, I am pretty sure Vancouver and Canada's finest don't need our help

Not EPIC and LULZ worthy enough. We need to do something that is related to something SFU is famous for. Sadly, I do think there are any pranks that involves Criminology, Business (unless you want to crash the Stock Market), and Kinesology.

I hope they don't get kicked out of school :(

If they do get expelled, they can always come here! But just don't start dangling cars above the convo mall.

Just wondering, was it your or Flora's boyfriend that's in UBC Enginnering? Or was this only a figment of my imagination?
  • edited February 2009
Haha, yes it was my bf. No, he wasn't involved.

    Or so you claim.

EPIC FAIL! Hahaha.. is there a picture in the article btw? I'd like to see someone make one of those EPIC FAIL motivational posters out of this =)

It's okay vonnie, you don't have to preserve his anonymity here =P haha jokes

But yeah, I definitely think the VW-hanging tradition is awesome. Doesn't cause anyone any trouble (unless, you know, they fail to the epic degree that they did this year) and it's tasteful and creative.

This has happened before and the students involved were all expelled. Although things may be different, but I doubt it. The deans may view this as a blow to their UBC credibility or something.

MIT has a tradition for pranks as well and some are CS related.

Yes my boyfriend plus about a dozen of my friends are in UBC Engineering. They were all participating in the Engineering Week event doing weird/crazy/stupid things but not the car thing in particular.

Vonnie, are you and your bf going to E-Ball on Saturday?

Computing Science? I do know that one of our CS grad, Minh "Goosemen Le, created Counter Strike.

Well, the way I see it, CS would be one of the more ideal faculties to pull a prank from. Not only is SFU's CS program known to have a good reputation, but it's one of those.. "applied" things you could do with real life e.g. pull pranks. I dunno, that's just my opinion :P

JayDub, that's your cue to start plotting something haha

    From Wikipedia:

    April 1, 1998
As an April Fool's Day prank, the MIT home page was replaced with a page announcing the university had been bought by The Walt Disney Company for $6.9 billion. The hacked page showed a picture of Mickey Mouse ears atop the Great Dome, and replaced the letter I in MIT with the lower-case "i" from Disney's wordmark. It even contained a fake press release with statements purportedly from Disney and MIT officials, detailing terms of the acquisition.[12]
    That's a good CS prank.

Aww I was hoping you were going, Vonnie! I'm always a loner at E-Ball hahaa.
And his name is Kevin Pan. He's in Materials... so unless your bf is also in Materials, they might not know each other.

No need to worry, if I ever learned any real life lessons from Monopoly, it's that you can buy your way out of jail for a blue $50 bill.
