The people who make Tropicana orange juice have calculuated how much carbon is emitted to create a carton of juice, Andrew Martin writes in the Times Business section. Surprisingly, he says, ”the biggest single source of emissions was simply growing oranges. Citrus groves use a lot of nitrogen fertilizer, which requires natural gas to make and can turn into a potent greenhouse gas when it is spread on fields.” They haven’t decided whether to include the information on the cartons and, Andy writes, some environmentalists say such marketingefforts may rely on fuzzy math.
