Can't believe Patullo got on fire!

edited January 2009 in General
That's insane! I hope nobody is stuck having to drive to burnaby from the other side because they are gonna be stuck for a long time...they say it's gonna be closed for at least a month

I say, we get rid of slurrey, then we won't have a problem.

Yeah, someone did and failed. The billion dollar condo project called Quatro or something got set on fire last year. There's two large unfinished condo buildings near the King George station as well. One of the banks crashed and the funding dried up.

Screw Surrey. What a mess. If the main attraction to Surrey is the SFU Surrey building, then you have some major problems.

So it actually went on fire? I thought someone TRIED to do that lastnight and was unsuccessful.

No, hobos were burning stuff to keep warm and then supports underneath caught on fire.

While the whole bridge didn't exactly become a teppanyaki grill, but one of the wooden legs on the Surrey end was burnt to the point that whatever was left has to be demolished and rebuilt. It may take them a month to get this fixed.

Currently, RCMP suspects that it was some homeless people setting up a sort of camp fire at the base of the bridge that caused this fire.

Looking at Google Map, it is going to be a pain for Surrey Residents to get out of Surrey now that that Patullo Bridge is out of comission for a month. The only two bridges that are left are Port Mann and Alex Fraser, plus the Skytrain bridge if you are taking Skytrain.

Edit: I didn't even know about this until I read this thread :(. Had I knew this early today, I would have so go to Surrey and observe the carnage after I get out of class at 11:30.

It's plain obvious suburbs getting the short end of the stick.

Surrey has always been a mess. It's the neglected hobo house of lower mainland.

There's little infrastructure in place to address the issue of congestion. There's little effort made in not transforming the place into a mind-numbing suburb with massive parking lot strip mall style amenities.

About 10 years ago when I first lived at Surrey, there were tons and tons of forests, parks and natural amenities. There used to be a huge acre of forests along 152nd, now it's all gone and replaced by these ugly single homes without a single tree anywhere.

You're right, it just started becoming a neglected hobo house.

I'm in Langley and it's bruuutal to get out. I'm having to take the skytrain and bus to get the Vancouver every morning on time, which is so out of the way )=

ouch, do u take the port mann? or alex fraser?
i think it would be much easier if u get on 64th or hwy 10 and take alex fraser
I actually live by highway 10 and its a bit faster to take alex than patullo to get to burnaby campus

I get on at the Port Mann. I take the Patullo like once a year when I'm over there, so that's not really an issue...it's just the volume heading to the Port Mann now.
    Damn homeless.

All the traffic convenience aside, good thing nobody burnt themselves to death because of this accident. Do anyone here know that a homeless woman actually burnt herself to death in Downtown East Side back in December trying to keep warm with candles? She was offered shelter in a homeless shelter twice, but she refused because she don't want to leave her belongings outside.

It's pathetic how easy it is to cripple movement around lower mainland.

If you are in Langley and need to go to Maple Ridge, you need to take a bloody ferry. When the river is frozen and the ferry won't work, you have two choices: Port Mann or Abby-Mission Hwy. Those two routes add 40km to your trip.

An accident on Port Mann, a lot of people on both side are screwed. Same deal with Second Narrow.

Massey tunnel is 4 lanes both direction. For Christ's sake, Hasting is 4 lanes for both direction.

The shortsightedness of transportation planning in this region is shocking. I understand why they avoided building more highways and bridges, but you have to plan alternatives, and the alternative isn't staying home.

OTOH, with all the stress, no time, and the driving, it's good business for the pharma, fast food, auto, and oil industry. Ka-ching!

Sometimes Port Mann is bad enough with Patullo in use.

Keep in mind that the population growth in this region has increased exponentially over the past 20 years and the bridges and infrastructure was put in place well before BC was an established and popular place to live. I don't think anyone expected that which is one of the main reasons why getting around Vancouver is so difficult. More Skytrain routes would be awesome its such a convenient and efficient way to travel...

And based on the projected population growth, GVRD will be the most populated region in Canada in the next two decades.

And the plan to meet the population demand to address transportation issue in the next decade? Almost non-existent.

Here's what you got until the end of this decade.

    1. Canada Line.
    2. Evergreen Line hasn't started yet. It should've started at least 10 years ago. The entire PoCo region is a parking lot in rush hour.
    3. Golden Ear bridge.

    That's it. It's sad.

in the end it really dosnt matter how much they expand the roads and bridges because at peak traffic they will be just as congested even if they double up

i was quite shocked to see the traffic nightmare that goes on in Honolulu Hawaii and that wasnt even during peak hour! just goes to show a 10lane highway didnt help much lol

^ lol ya but thats in an area with large population in my example i tried to kinda show how even an area with a relatively small population can get raped by traffic even with large highways

I've driven on every major highway in Canada, NE USA and W coast of USA
there is only so much they can do but ur right Van is lacking major in the transportation department

the fact that pretty much everyone needs to use the same route in the same direction at the same time seems a bit inefficient. (not to mention all in seperate vehicles!)
  • edited January 2009
Wouldn't more lanes promote more traffic in a way? If I know I'm not going to get stuck in traffic from new lanes being added, I would sure as hell drive to campus than take transit. If everyone has my mentality, it would still get congested anyways.
  • edited January 2009
lanes are never added "ahead" of time
their always added when the problem is so bad that there is no alternative... and what they do add will not resolve any problems just make them less apparent for another few decades
  • edited January 2009
Good thing I never head in that direction ;)

That's why the Golden Ears is about to open.

But I agree with the rest.
