CS : Math 232 or 240

edited January 2009 in General
No response from advisor yet, and no one in the CS advising place right now i think..

Which linear algebra course am I supposed to take? It seems as though I've seen conflicting information, some saying 232 (applied) and some saying 240.
I'm signed up for 232 right now.

depends what year you entered school..., take a look at this link:

    under: Graduation Planning Forms

and place yourself under the time frame of admission

I'm in 232 this semester. Our prof mentioned that 232 is for applied sciences while 240 is for those going into mathematics. Although a TalkerSFUer mentioned that 240 is going to replace 232 so I'm not sure.

yeah, I felt a bit better after he (the prof) said that, but form that mike linked says 240 (if admitted fall 2006 or later), whereas the information i was going by before said 232...

Quoted from another thread I made before -- good info:

The "old" 232 has been replaced by 240. The "new" 232 is now Applied Linear Algebra (basically, 240 without the proofs).

If you're in Comp. Sci, the new requirement is 240, unless you enrolled in a very limited time period (the was an email sent out about it 2-3 semesters ago).

If you're going to take 240, I recommend taking it with Monagan, if he's still teaching it.

Also, if you have to take MACM 316, take it immediately after 240, it'll make it that much easier.

well, shit, why would they do that? And unsurprisingly 240 completely gays up my schedule :(

    I'm in 240 :)
    Not doing CS though haha.

An update to that: Apparently, there is some mass confusion. CS Advisors are apparently telling students they can still take 232 (even those who declared after 2006, or whenever their original cutoff was).

The latest graduation plan still shows 240 as the new requirement, though. I've also heard rumors that they may change the requirement to the new 232, but this is unsubstantiated.

I avoided the confusion by doing 240 anyway!
